Former Essendon captain\ufeff Tim Watson<\/a> has underscored what he thought was the "strongest argument" in Collingwood's successful bid to free Brayden Maynard for the club's preliminary final<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The key defender is available for Collingwood<\/a>'s grand final qualifier despite knocking out Melbourne<\/a>'s Angus Brayshaw at the MCG last Thursday night.<\/p>\n

Maynard and his team gave extensive evidence in their push to overturn the rough conduct charge, which had been graded by the match review officer as careless conduct, severe impact\ufeff and high contact.<\/p>\n

Watson and former Melbourne\ufeff skipper Garry Lyon thrashed it out on SEN radio on Wednesday morning, unpacking Tuesday night's AFL<\/a> tribunal hearing into Maynard's attempted smother gone wrong.<\/p>\n

"I'll just give you a couple of things about what happened last night and what may have been the most-powerful and strongest argument that was presented by \ufeffthe biomechanist and neuroscientist, Michael Cole," Watson said.<\/p>\n

"He said, 'Once Maynard was in flight he basically is a projectile, a frisbee with legs. The average human reaction time was 200-250 milliseconds. Athletes are faster … Maynard had no more than 400 milliseconds to react on a football field'.<\/p>\n

\"Brayden<\/p>\n

"Jeff Gleeson, who was the tribunal chair, said, 'We accept the evidence of Professor Cole that he did not believe that Maynard's body position of the time of impact could be considered part of any conscious decision'.<\/p>\n

"So, that was pretty much it in a nutshell in terms of … the deciding factor in this case."<\/p>\n

Lyon applauded Cole's tribunal performance.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"The irony of all that was one of the arguments was if you haven't played the game you can't understand what it's like to jump in the air and not be able to pull up. Well this is a bloke who didn't play the game and argued beautifully on their behalf," Lyon said with a laugh.<\/p>\n

"It was a scientific explanation," Watson added.<\/p>\n

After a four-hour hearing, the panel ruled that Maynard's smother attempt was reasonable and agreed he'd made no conscious decision to bump Brayshaw.\ufeff<\/p>\n

When handing down his verdict, Gleeson said Maynard was "not careless in either his decision to smother or the way in which his body formed after the smother".<\/p>\n

"Someone asked me yesterday, 'Reputationally, what has this done for Brayden Maynard, whether he gets off [or not]?'," Lyon said.<\/p>\n

"I don't think it's done any harm\ufeff … [It] was a split-second decision."<\/p>\n

\"MELBOURNE,<\/p>\n

Lyon's remarks\ufeff are a polar opposite to those of Hamish Brayshaw, one of Angus' younger brothers.<\/p>\n

"\ufeff[Bringing up football finals] is the dumbest argument ever," Hamish Brayshaw, a former West Coast Eagles player, said on the Shelter FootyCast<\/em> podcast on Monday.<\/p>\n

"Finals footy, yep, I know you want to [play with] intent, I know you want to be physical, but you can protect yourself and protect the person you are about to hit in the face. I think he could have easily done that.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffIf they call it off and say he's good to play and this is a football act \u2014 well, then they can never feasibly ever say that the outcome is affected."<\/p>\n

In a preliminary final at the MCG next week, Collingwood will face the winner of the semi-final between Port Adelaide and Greater Western Sydney.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
