Collingwood<\/a> veteran Steele Sidebottom and big man Mason Cox have defended their "hard and fair" teammate Brayden Maynard after his clash with Melbourne<\/a>'s Angus Brayshaw in their qualifying final win \ufeffsaw him referred straight to the tribunal.<\/a><\/p>\n

Maynard's hit was deemed careless conduct, severe impact and high contact, with the 26-year-old to face the AFL tribunal on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n

Despite division over the decision which may cost Maynard a grand final appearance if the Pies are to make it, Cox stood behind the defender, adamant that he did everything in his power to minimise contact with Brayshaw.<\/p>\n

"I'd hire Carlton's lawyer \u2026 There's been a lot of commentary about it. From looking at it, I don't know what more he could've done. He left the ground before the ball was even kicked. I can't really change direction in the air, I'm not that talented," Cox said on Jase & Lauren on KIIS 101.1 on Monday.<\/p>\n

"Obviously in the AFL with what's going on (concussion), it's a massive storyline every single week. I hope he is alright but looking at it, it's tough to do that any other way."<\/p>\n

Cox went on to \ufeffdefend Maynard's character, as debate continues to rage over the incident.<\/p>\n

"He plays on the edge, but he is the loveliest, most cuddliest guy you'll ever meet \u2026 He is the nicest guy you'll ever meet," Cox said.<\/p>\n

"He does have a care for people. We are all in this industry together, we all know the risks we take going out there."<\/p>\n

As for 307-gamer Steele Sidebottom, \ufeffhe stood strong on the idea that Maynard's act was a football one.<\/p>\n

"He was making a play at the footy and it was a footy play," Sidebottom told reporters on Monday.<\/p>\n

The Magpies veteran pleaded with the community to see \ufeffthe "hard" but "fair" manner in which Maynard attacks his game, leaning on his clean record to support his cause.<\/p>\n

"There was no malice in it. Bruz (Maynard) is a fair player and it's just unfortunate the way it ended," he said.<\/p>\n

"You've watched how he plays – he hasn't really ever stepped over the line.<\/p>\n

"When he goes out there to play, he plays hard and fair. That's what I see from Brayden."\ufeff<\/p>\n

Sidebottom also concluded that "accidents are going to happen" in the game due to its speed and in this scenario, not much could be done differently to protect Brayshaw.<\/p>\n

"The game happens so fast and there's times when things happen that you almost can't control," Sidebottom said.<\/p>\n

"It's a 360-degree game, there's guys coming from everywhere and sometimes it's unfortunate that things like that happen.<\/p>\n

"That's the game that we play and accidents are going to happen."<\/p>\n

Maynard will face the tribunal on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n
