Daniil Medvedev<\/a> ended Carlos Alcaraz's<\/a> reign as the U.S. Open<\/a> champion and had a word for overzealous Spanish fans after eliminating the 20-year-old in the semi-finals 7-6 (3), 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 to set up a rematch in the final against Novak Djokovic.<\/p>\n

The No. 3-seeded Medvedev won his lone major title at Flushing Meadows in 2021 by defeating 23-time Slam winner Djokovic in that year's final.<\/p>\n

That prevented Djokovic from completing what would have been the first calendar-year Grand Slam in men's tennis since 1969.<\/p>\n

The top-seeded Alcaraz \u2014 a 20-year-old from Spain who will relinquish the No. 1 ranking to Djokovic no matter what happens in the final \u2014 had been trying to become the first man to claim consecutive championships in New York since Roger Federer won five in a row from 2004-08.<\/p>\n

Ever since before the start of these two weeks, fans had been anticipating a Djokovic vs. Alcaraz final. That would have been a rematch of the trophy-determining match at Wimbledon in July, when Alcaraz edged Djokovic in five sets.<\/p>\n

It was clear the crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium wanted Alacaraz to be the victor to set up a mouth-watering clash\ufeff with Djokovic, cheering loudly every time the Russian faulted or made an error.<\/p>\n

It resulted in Medvedev giving the crowd the thumbs up on occasion and also led to the No.3 seed sending a pointed message to some Alcaraz fans.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I felt it was loud for both sides," he told Mary Joe Fernandez during the on-court interview.<\/p>\n

"The only thing was a thousand Spanish guys started screaming\ufeff at 5-3 (final set), between first and second serves, that's not so nice. But I guess they were desperate. So I'm happy I didn't help them they can go to sleep now."<\/p>\n

Instead, it will be Medvedev, who will be appearing in his third U.S. Open final in five years and his fifth major title match in all.<\/p>\n

He lost to Rafael Nadal in New York in 2019, and to Djokovic at the Australian Open in 2021 and 2022.<\/p>\n

"The challenge is that you play a guy that won 23 Grand Slams, and I have only one," Medvedev said, looking ahead to taking on Djokovic. "When I beat him here, I managed to play better than myself, so I need to do it again. There is no other way."<\/p>\n

Medvedev had lost to Alcaraz twice this season, including in the Wimbledon semifinals. Those head-to-head results left Medevev concerned.<\/p>\n
