In the NRL's first qualifying final of the season<\/a>, Melbourne and the Broncos<\/a> engaged in a heated first half with \ufeffa melee and two players forced off for head injury assessments.<\/p>\n

\ufeffOrigin teammates Pat Carrigan<\/a> and Harry Grant came to blows in the first set of the game when the hooker took exception to Carrigan's role in the ruck.<\/p>\n

A number of players joined in the heated exchange \ufeffbefore the referee let tensions simmer and called for a play-the-ball.<\/p>\n

Then in the 22nd minute, Melbourne was forced to inject star fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen in the game earlier than expected after a sickening injury to Young Tonumaipea.<\/p>\n

The Storm centre was the unfortunate victim of friendly fire in the first half when his head came in contact with the back of Reece Walsh's left boot.<\/p>\n

Tonumaipea had blood streaming from his face and was attended to by Broncos legend Allan Langer before Melbourne's \ufefftrainer arrived. The Samoa representative then left the field for a head injury assessment and was replaced by Papenhuyzen, who went to fullback with Nick Meaney shifting to the centres.<\/p>\n

"He's got a lot of blood streaming from his forehead," Melbourne great Cameron Smith said on Nine's coverage.<\/p>\n

In the same play, Cameron Munster was then penalised for a head high tackle on Walsh, but Queensland legend Paul Vautin wasn't happy with the adjudication. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"Please, it's a semi-final, that's as soft as a two-minute egg," he said.<\/p>\n

"He didn't even swing his arm, turn that up."<\/p>\n

After the incident, Tonumaipea then passed his HIA\ufeff and replaced lock Josh King in the 38th minute.<\/p>\n

Storm forward Tom Eisenhuth also left the field moments before for an HIA.<\/p>\n
