The NRL<\/a> will hold open trials for former NFL<\/a> and college players looking to switch to rugby league during its trip to Las Vegas\ufeff.<\/p>\n

Sources have told The Sydney Morning Herald\ufeff<\/a> all 17 NRL club bosses have been told of the plan and are expected to fly to Las Vegas where ex-NFL and college players could enter a rugby league combine.<\/p>\n

It will be in the lead up to\ufeff the NRL's double-header to open the 2024 season, with up to 60 male and female players expected to attend.<\/p>\n

The idea is in its infancy but it's part of a broader five-year plan for the NRL to play regular-season matches in the United States.<\/p>\n

While the NRL is realistic about how many players will filter through, \ufeff there are hopes a small few could be offered lower-tier or train-and-trial deals in Australia.<\/p>\n

It hopes to \ufeffattract someone like the late Manfred Moore, who was the highest profile NFL athlete to make the switch, recruited by the Newtown Jets with the backing of John Singleton in 1977.<\/p>\n

He played his first top-grade rugby league match only three months after being a member of the Oakland Raiders squad that won a Super Bowl.<\/p>\n

The NRL has told officials of the four clubs who will play in the double-header – the Rabbitohs, Roosters, Broncos and Sea Eagles – the Allegiant Stadium field will be five metres narrower than a traditional rugby league field.<\/p>\n

On top of that, the length of the field will only be\ufeff 96 metres from tryline to tryline, with the playing surface considerably smaller than NRL venues.<\/p>\n
