NRL icon Phil Gould<\/a> has expressed his confusion over the untapped potential of Zac Lomax<\/a>, and implored the Dragons<\/a> to not shift him to fullback.<\/p>\n

With Tyrell Sloan's defensive struggles at the back this season, reports have suggested he'll fight for the No.1 jersey with Lomax in 2024.<\/p>\n

Gould believes the Dragons star is suited to where he's played most of his career. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"Nah (he shouldn't play fullback), I think he's a brilliant right centre, I think he's an Origin class right centre," he said on Nine's 100% Footy.<\/p>\n

"I don't know what's happened there, they move him to the left and they move him to the right – things happen around this kid, they really do.<\/p>\n

"I don't know if people have rated him as much as I rate him, he's a phenomenal footballer."<\/p>\n

NRL premiership winner Paul Gallen, who shares a close relationship with incoming Dragons coach Shane Flanagan, expressed his doubts over Sloan's future at the back.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Do you think having his (Lomax) hands on the ball more would be beneficial for the team?," he asked.<\/p>\n

"(Tyrell) Sloan and (Talatau) Amone\ufeff, I think I've seen some things from Amone this year where I think OK he's got something, Sloan he can do things others can't do but I don't know about Sloan … they've been around a couple of years now, it's not like they've started."<\/p>\n

Gould then doubled down on his preference for Lomax to stay at centre and questioned whether the star had been made a "scapegoat" at the Dragons after he was dropped by axed coach Anthony Griffin<\/a> during the year. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"If you get Zac Lomax to be running eight and 10 kilometres a game, which fullbacks are these days, it will blunt a lot of the other stuff which he might do and do explosively from where he is," he said.<\/p>\n

"He's a brilliant right centre, I've always loved him as a right centre.<\/p>\n

"I don't know whether they've valued him as much as they really should. I know he's on a big contract, they obviously did at some stage but I don't know, I kind of think he's sometimes the scapegoat when it's not his fault."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
