A "problematic" move from the GWS Giants<\/a> at the tribunal has backfired with Toby Bedford's one-match ban upheld.<\/p>\n

Bedford was handed the one-match ban for an off-ball hit on Carlton<\/a>'s Zac Fisher in round 24, with the Giants aiming to have the rough conduct charge overturned.<\/p>\n

In a move deemed "problematic" by tribunal chair Jeff Gleeson, the Giants called on Fisher to give evidence, claiming the vision of the incident itself was unclear.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Fisher was allowed to give evidence after the AFL did not object to the Giants' request.\ufeff<\/p>\n

The Carlton forward, who played the remainder of the contest after being floored by Bedford's hit, said he was "a bit shocked" after the bump, but admitted he could've protected himself better.<\/p>\n

"It (the contact) sort of caught me by surprise, it happened really quickly. I felt it on my front shoulder, so I wasn't really able to properly protect myself," he told the tribunal.<\/p>\n

Fisher also said he was "surprised" when asked to undergo a head injury assessment at three-quarter time, revealing Carlton's doctors put him through a SCAT5 test.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Bedford's hit was initially graded as careless conduct with medium impact and high contact, but the Giants argued that the hit did not constitute rough conduct and, if it did, the impact was lower than medium and contact was not high.\ufeff<\/p>\n

In a marathon hearing which lasted over two hours, the Giants also submitted a biomechanist's report.<\/p>\n

Lisa Hannon, the AFL's representative, said Bedford's actions were "unreasonable\ufeff in the circumstances".<\/p>\n

"He could've elected to shepherd or block without bumping in the manner he did," she said.<\/p>\n

However, the Giants' representative, Ben Ihle, called Bedford's bump a "reasonable football action".<\/p>\n

"AFL football is still a contact sport where bumping is permitted," he said.<\/p>\n

"There are two umpires with a clear line of sight to the bump, neither of them awarded a free kick.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

The Tribunal's call means Bedford will miss the Giants' elimination final against St Kilda on Saturday afternoon.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
