{"id":327474,"date":"2023-08-31T17:42:42","date_gmt":"2023-08-31T17:42:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportinfo.pro\/?p=327474"},"modified":"2023-08-31T18:00:05","modified_gmt":"2023-08-31T18:00:05","slug":"california-hs-football-player-dies-after-severe-asthma-attack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sportinfo.pro\/?p=327474","title":{"rendered":"California HS football player dies after severe asthma attack"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to a report by\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/highschool\/story\/2023-08-30\/westlake-football-player-dies-julius-poppinga\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">LA Times&#8217; Eric Sondheimer<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, a football player at Westlake High School in California, has died after suffering a severe asthma attack.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">His name was Julius Poppinga, and he played defensive end for Westlake in their season opener against Taft (Calif.) two weeks ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Head coach Mark Serve told Sondheimer that he visited Poppinga at the hospital earlier this week, and he seemed to be improving. The 17-year-old wanted to talk about football rather than his health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cHe didn\u2019t want to talk about his health. He wanted to talk football&#8230; We talked about him getting back on the field. I was texting last night, letting him know, \u2018I love you.\u2019 This morning, I got the news.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">At a team meeting, players were informed of Poppinga\u2019s death. Principal Jason Branham informed the rest of the school via email.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Westlake (1-1) will visit Thousand Oaks (Calif.) this Friday night.
