I\ufefft was fitting that Australia's Nina Kennedy tore down the Zurich Diamond League runway like a train on Thursday morning (AEST).<\/p>\n

After all, Australia's newest athletics world champion was \ufeffcompeting at Zurich's main train station, where she clinched victory and broke the national record already belonging to her.<\/p>\n

A week after the West Australian twice broke her national record en route to sharing gold at Budapest's world championships<\/a>, she upped her Australian record by one centimetre in a dominant victory at the last Diamond League pole vault tournament before the final.<\/p>\n

Kennedy soared to victory with a jump of 4.91 metres at the indoor event in Switzerland, as Katie Moon (4.81 metres) and fellow American Sandi Morris (4.76 metres) rounded out the podium.<\/p>\n

It was Moon who Kennedy had split gold with at the world championships \u2014 an agreement described by Australian pole vault legend Steve Hooker as "a beautiful moment in sport"<\/a>.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Kennedy charged up the Zurich runway to the noise of pumping tunes and clapping, before launching herself over the bar and putting a hand to her mouth in disbelief. She then sprung to her feet and waved and blew kisses to those who'd cheered her on at Zurich's chief train station.<\/p>\n

"Having a week off after worlds, I just wanted to go out there and have fun, and I think because the pressure was off I was able to just focus on doing what I love," Kennedy said.<\/p>\n

"I can't believe I was able to jump 4.91 tonight.<\/p>\n

"I didn't actually have a lot of confidence going in today.<\/p>\n

"I knew that Katie was out for blood. Sharing that gold medal was nice and all but tonight we both wanted to win and be the outright winner, so I felt the pressure. We had a great battle tonight and I came out on top and she fought really hard and it fills me with a lot of confidence going into Eugene for the Diamond League finals and for next year, too."\ufeff<\/p>\n

Kennedy's jump of 4.91 metres also broke the meet record and elevated her to sixth on the all-time World Athletics indoor list.\ufeff<\/p>\n

But she'd had a short-lived scare at 4.76 metres,\ufeff failing to clear the bar with her first two jumps at that height.<\/p>\n

Kennedy and Morris both cleared the bar with their third attempts at 4.76 metres to set up a three-way battle with Moon.<\/p>\n

And while Morris failed to jump any higher than 4.76 metres and Moon 4.81 metres, Kennedy blitzed the 4.81, 4.86 and 4.91 heights with her first attempts.<\/p>\n

She then had three cracks at 4.96 but couldn't\ufeff go so high.<\/p>\n

Kennedy will be out to defend her 2022 Diamond League title at Eugene's final, to be held from September 16-17.\ufeff<\/p>\n
