An emotional Brisbane Lions<\/a> coach Chris Fagan<\/a> has fought back tears paying tribute to retiring defender Marcus Adams, who has decided to hang up the boots after his poor luck with concussions.<\/p>\n

Adams, who played 73 games for the Western Bulldogs (27) and the Lions (46), announced his retirement to his teammates and staff on Wednesday, after multiple delayed concussion setbacks that he has struggled to recover from.<\/p>\n

Holding back tears, the coach dedicated the Lions' upcoming finals series to Adams, who hasn't play a game for the club in 2023.<\/p>\n

"When we run out for the finals mate, we run with you in our heads and we give it our best shot," Fagan said through tears on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Fagan lauded Adams' professionalism and manner that he approached his career and consequent setbacks.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I'm so sad that it's come to this," Fagan said.<\/p>\n

"There couldn't be anyone more professional than you. You got the best out of yourself.<\/p>\n

"You're the one that's supposed to get upset, not me!"<\/p>\n

Adams was placed on the club's inactive list in January to allow him the chance to work on his recovery and wellbeing after suffering delayed concussion symptoms late last year, but conceded he knew his retirement was imminent.<\/p>\n

"It's officially tough to do it," Adams told teammates on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

"While no part of me really wants to let it go, I know it's the right decision for me.<\/p>\n

"I've sort of waiting for the time to come where I might feel good enough to be able to start training\u2026 unfortunately that hasn't happened for me yet and I don't know if it will."<\/p>\n

Even facing his setbacks that ultimately forced the premature end to the 30-year-old's career, Adams showed gratitude for the Lions and Bulldogs while expressing his heartbreak in having to walk away under these circumstances.<\/p>\n

"The whole journey is something I will remember very fondly, and even though it hasn't ended how I would've liked, it has been the best experience I could have hoped for."<\/p>\n

"It's hard knowing I won't be a part of it anymore."<\/p>\n
