Rising Aussie player Rinky Hijikata<\/a> expressed shock over a shooting at his old school after a first-round US Open<\/a> win over Pavel Kotov.<\/p>\n

Hijikata picked up a guaranteed $192,000 with a 7-5, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 four-hour victory over Russia's Kotov, but the hard fought win was soured by news a teacher at University of North Carolina was killed in a deadly shooting.<\/p>\n

Hijikat\ufeffa was part of the UNC men's team in 2020-21 and studied business for two years, while his girlfriend still attends the school.<\/p>\n

Video of students jumping out of a window to escape the gunman was released online and Hijikata admitted it was difficult viewing, after he learned of the event after his match.<\/p>\n

"I was pretty happy with the win today, but that's kind of put a dampener on it, to be honest," Hijikata said.<\/p>\n

"First and foremost, I want to send my thoughts and prayers to everyone back in Chapel Hill because that's not something you want to see what's happened. There is a lot bigger than my tennis match here today.<\/p>\n

"I was there for two years. I would have graduated this May, but my girlfriend is still in school there. I've still got a lot mates on the team or in school."<\/p>\n

Hijikata's victory earned the Sydneysider a shot at unseeded Hungarian Marton Fucsovics for a place in the third round of a grand slam for the first time. He said the news of the shooting won't pose as a distraction but motivation.<\/p>\n

"I think come tomorrow hopefully I will be all right," he said.<\/p>\n

"I'll definitely be focused on my match. If anything, I want to try and play 10, 20 per cent harder on Wednesday for everyone at school at the moment.<\/p>\n
