Former Matilda\ufeff Toni McMahon has given a left-field take on the kissing scandal that's marred the FIFA Women's World Cup<\/a>, admitting she's "not backing either side" because it pales in comparison to what she's witnessed in her time in football.<\/p>\n

McMahon, a member of the original Matildas outfit formed in 1978, weighed in on the saga after Spain's football governing body asked under-fire president Luis Rubiales to resign.\ufeff<\/p>\n

McMahon's view has been coloured by a dark history of women in football being subjected to gross behaviour and because of that she has found the reaction to the kissing scandal overblown.<\/p>\n

It's a view that contrasts with\ufeff Australian champion hurdler Jana Pittman, who said it was "wrong" that Rubiales had not resigned and said not standing up for consent was a "misdemeanour for the women globally".<\/p>\n

"I have seen things in my time that would not be acceptable now," McMahon said on Nine's Today<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"We're talking … things that if people saw they'd be disgusted, actually.<\/p>\n

"So, you know, a kiss on the podium for a celebration compared to what I've seen \u2014 I've got to say it's nothing, but it's still something. But the things I've seen you'd put them in jail."<\/p>\n

\u00c1ngeles B\u00e9jar told news agency EFE she would remain on the hunger strike "night and day" in a fight against the condemnation of her son, which she described as "inhumane hounding".<\/p>\n

"The pressure's on, isn't it? The pressure's on from everybody and everywhere, and the right thing for him to do would be to resign just to move on," McMahon added.<\/p>\n

"I'm not backing either side, but I just personally think there's a lot of questions still.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

\ufeffPittman hit out at Rubiales on the ABC's Q&A<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"I have been kissed inappropriately by a coach, not mine, an international coach, where it was a cultural norm in that setting," Pittman said.<\/p>\n

"And I didn't really think anything of it until I witnessed this on television.<\/p>\n

"Consent is very important for our women to feel safe in those different environments and if we don't stand up for it in a public setting, then it's really a misdemeanour for the women globally," she said.<\/p>\n
