Leading officials within the Spanish Football Federation asked suspended president Luis Rubiales to resign after kissing a player on the lips at the Women's World Cup final<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The heads of the regional bodies that make up the federation (RFEF) made the request in a collective statement.<\/p>\n

"After the latest developments and the unacceptable behaviour that has caused great damage to the image of Spanish soccer, the presidents request that Luis Rubiales resign immediately as president of the RFEF," the statement said.<\/p>\n

The mother of Luis Rubiales started a hunger strike in a church in southern Spain in defence of her son.<\/p>\n

\u00c1ngeles B\u00e9jar told the state news agency EFE she would remain on hunger strike \u201cnight and day\u201d until a solution is found to the \u201cinhumane hounding\u201d of her son.<\/p>\n

Speaking outside the church in the southern town of Motril, Rubiales\u2019 cousin, Vanessa Ruiz, joined his mother in calling on the player, Jenni Hermoso, to \u201ctell the truth".<\/p>\n

Hermoso has denied Rubiales' claim that she consented to what he called the \u201cmutual\u201d kiss during the medal ceremony after the Spanish women's team won the final in Sydney.<\/p>\n

In a statement Saturday, Hermoso said she considered herself the victim of abuse of power and accused the Spanish soccer federation of trying to pressure her into supporting Rubiales. The federation hit back by saying she was lying and that it would take legal action against her.<\/p>\n

On Monday night, the National Court's Prosecutors Office said it was opening a preliminary investigation into whether the kiss constituted a sexual aggression offence and said it would give Hermoso 15 days to file a formal complaint as an alleged victim of sexual aggression.<\/p>\n

Rubiales came in for a storm of criticism following the kiss which was interpreted by many as sexual abuse. Earlier during the medal celebrations, Rubiales also grabbed his crotch in a victory gesture while in the presidential box and close to Spain's Queen Letizia and her teenage daughter, Princess Sofia.<\/p>\n

FIFA, the world soccer body, provisionally suspended him for 90 days after he gave a defiant speech and refused to resign.<\/p>\n

Spain is hoping the country\u2019s sports tribunal, which resolves legal issues in sports, will remove Rubiales definitively. Victor Francos, head of the government's sports body, said the tribunal has yet to inform it what it intends to do about Rubiales.<\/p>\n

Francos also expressed concern over how the issue may affect Spain's bid to hold the 2030 World Cup with Portugal, Morocco and possibly Ukraine.<\/p>\n

The scandal has caused a commotion in Spain and abroad.<\/p>\n

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric criticised what he called a \u201ccritical issue of sexism\u201d in sports, adding: "We hope the Spanish authorities and the Spanish government deal with this in a manner that respects the rights of all female athletes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Acting deputy prime minister Yolanda D\u00edaz met with soccer union representatives with a view to removing Rubiales and changing the way equality issues are managed in Spanish soccer.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere has to be a profound renewal of the sporting structure in our country,\u201d she said at a news conference.<\/p>\n
