R\ufeffabbitohs<\/a> captain Cameron Murray<\/a> has recommitted until the end of the 2028 season in a huge boost for the under-fire club.<\/p>\n

A schoolboy rugby star, Murray had been openly courted by Rugby Australia for a code switch ahead of the 2027 World Cup but that threat has been extinguished for the time being.<\/p>\n

The signing is a welcome story for the Rabbitohs as they bunker down ahead of a must-win clash against arch-rivals the Roosters.<\/p>\n

"This club has always been home to me and I never saw myself playing anywhere else," Murray said.\n<\/p>\n

"It was a no brainer for me to extend my contract here and I'm grateful to be able to represent South Sydney, our
\n members and fans every day.\n<\/p>\n

"The club has always looked after me and I feel like I've always done my best to put the club's best interests at
\n the forefront of anything I do.\n<\/p>\n

"I'm really grateful to the club for putting its trust in me to be a part of our next five years.\n<\/p>\n

"It's my responsibility now to repay that trust with my performances on the field and my actions off the field."<\/p>\n

Murray's contract extension is reportedly worth \ufeff$950,000-a-season, putting him in the top bracket of NRL player salaries.<\/p>\n

It's a fitting reward for a player who has become arguably the best back-rower in the game, but it's come at a time when the Rabbitohs are in the headlines for all the wrong reasons.<\/p>\n

Last week Sam Burgess cut ties with the club<\/a> after it was reported that he was banging heads with Jason Demetriou over the treatment of star players Latrell Mitchell and Cody Walker among other issues.<\/p>\n

It has since emerged that the son of Souths royalty Clive Churchill sent a text message to Souths chairman Nick Pappas venting his spleen about the damage Mitchell was doing to the club<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Murray has since gone public with a staunch defence of the star<\/a> fullback, but the damaging headlines continue to mount as the Rabbitohs face an elimination game against the Roosters<\/a> on Friday night.<\/p>\n
