G\ufeffeelong<\/a> may be out of the finals for the first time since 2015, but the reigning premiers still receive the best on ground votes for their elite Mad Monday celebrations.<\/p>\n

This year's headline performer was none other than Gryan Miers\ufeff, who was at the centre of a fake tweet from leading AFL broadcaster Gerard Whateley that circulated earlier in the season, stating the winger was "better than (Lionel) Messi".<\/p>\n

"Gryan Miers is to AFL what Leo Messi is to soccer. Messi may kick more goals, but Miers scans the field just as well. Maybe even better than Messi does," the tweet, falsely attributed to Whateley read.<\/p>\n

The tweet sent the AFL world into a frenzy, with Whateley himself replying to the fake quote, asking for it to be deleted from Twitter, stating "I never said this and it should be removed #fakequote."<\/p>\n

But Miers, along with teammate Max Holmes\ufeff arrived at the Wharf Shed in Geelong bringing light to the situation in a fashion only Geelong can.<\/p>\n

Miers dressed as Messi, while Holmes came as Whateley with the fake tweet in hand on a poster board.<\/p>\n

The costumes, which circulated social media, reached Whateley back in Melbourne, who, despite his initial anger\ufeff with the situation, saw the funny side to the celebrations.<\/p>\n

"I'm here for this \u2026 good humour lads," Whateley wrote on Twitter.<\/p>\n

Another memorable costume was \ufeffpulled together by superstar forward Tom Hawkins, premiership midfielder Cam Guthrie and retiring champion Isaac Smith, who provided even more laughs on Monday.<\/p>\n

The trio came dressed as\ufeff the controversial Adelaide goal line decision that cost the Crows' a finals berth, with Hawkins and Guthrie the goalposts, and Smith as Ben Keays, whose goal was disallowed.<\/p>\n

Geelong legend Billy Brownless, who owns the Wharf Shed where celebrations are usually held was even in on the fun\ufeff playing goal umpire.<\/p>\n

Other notable costumes included two time premiership veteran Mitch Duncan dressed as club runner and ex-premiership Cat \ufeffShannon Byrnes as well as young trio Tanner Bruhn, Toby Conway and Mitch Knevitt all as Ken dolls from the 'Barbie' movie.<\/p>\n

Cats captain Patrick Dangerfield and ruckman Rhys Stanley channelled their inner Top Gun, while defender Tom Stewart found similarities to YouTube and boxing star Jake Paul.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Geelong's Mad Monday and Wacky Wednesday celebrations have become a strong tradition for the Cats and for the AFL world alike\ufeff, led by triple premiership defenders Matthew Scarlett and Corey Enright.<\/p>\n

Last year's celebrations after the Cats 81-point Grand Final victory over the Swans saw the playing group \ufeffarrive dressed as elderly men, paying tribute to their dubbed 'retirement village' aging list.<\/p>\n
