On the same granule of track that Femke Bol fell and coughed up relay gold on the opening night of the world athletics championships<\/a>, the Dutch athlete has completed an astonishing anchor leg to win relay gold by the length of a track spike.<\/p>\n

Bol's Budapest campaign began in disastrous scenes when she crashed to the track only a couple of metres from the finish line of the mixed 4x400m, before stumbling back to her feet and collecting bronze.<\/p>\n

But in the final event of the nine-day Budapest major, the 23-year-old nosed ahead of Britain's Nicole Yeargin, and a split second later Jamaican Stacey Ann Williams, on the same few square centimetres of track to steal gold in the women's 4x400m.<\/p>\n

Bol, whose relay bronze and relay gold flanked an individual triumph in the women's 400-metre hurdles, charged back from well down in third place to pocket the last-ditch victory.<\/p>\n

Exhausted but elated, she staggered into the arms of her stunned relay teammates and celebrated a remarkable turn of fate.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Can you believe it? Live sport cannot be beaten for drama," said commentator Rob Walker.<\/p>\n

"She fell at the line when the Dutch looked certain to take gold for the mixed 4x400m title, and with a fairytale finish you could not make up in Hollywood, Femke Bol has stolen \u2014 stolen \u2014 the last gold for the Netherlands."<\/p>\n

The Netherlands stopped the clock at 3:20.72, only 0.16 of a second ahead of the Jamaicans.<\/p>\n

Moments before Bol\ufeff's incredible relay run, joint Australian record-holders Eleanor Patterson and Nicola Olyslagers secured silver and bronze respectively in the women's high jump.<\/p>\n

Patterson couldn't defend the gold she won at last year's world championships in Eugene, but her silver medal iced a comeback from a fractured foot. The 27-year-old only made her return to competition at July's Silesia Diamond League<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Ukraine's Yaroslava Mahuchikh\ufeff won gold with a jump of 2.01 metres as Patterson and Olyslagers rounded out the podium with jumps of 1.99 metres, Patterson taking silver on countback.<\/p>\n

Never before in world championship history had Australia won two medals in one event.<\/p>\n

The final-day medals claimed by Patterson and Olyslagers also took Australia's Budapest medal count to six, which eclipsed its world championship record of four.<\/p>\n

Nina Kennedy won gold in the women's pole vault<\/a>, J\ufeffemima Montag clinched silver in the women's 20-kilometre race walk, Mackenzie Little took bronze in the women's javelin<\/a> and Kurtis Marschall bagged bronze in the men's pole vault.<\/p>\n

In the men's 5000 metres held on the final day, Australia's Stewart McSweyn\ufeff finished 13th in 13:26.58 two days after tripping over a rival and being advanced to the decider<\/a>.<\/p>\n
