Defending champions South Africa delivered an emphatic statement on the eve of the Rugby World Cup<\/a> with a record 35-7 demolition of archrivals New Zealand at Twickenham.<\/p>\n

The embarrassing 28 point margin was the biggest All Blacks loss in Test history, eclipsing the \ufeff21 point defeats to the Wallabies in 1999 and 2019.<\/p>\n

It was a scarcely believable outcome after the Kiwis, previously unbeaten in 2023, had outclassed the Springboks \ufeff35-20 on their way to the Rugby Championship in July.<\/p>\n

The All Blacks brains trust won't be fazed at missing out on the Qatar Airways Cup in the final game before the World Cup, but they will be fretting over the status of two key forwards.<\/p>\n

Prop Tyrel Lomax was carted off the field with a knee injury in the first half while lock Scott Barrett \ufeffwas sent off for a dumb and dangerous cleanout of Springboks hooker Malcolm Marx.<\/p>\n

"A disastrous first half for the All Blacks," commentator Rupert Cox said on Stan Sport's coverage.<\/p>\n

Leading 14-0 at halftime behind tries to Siya Kolisi and Kurt-Lee Arendse, South Africa's forward pack completely dominated the second term as Marx, Bongi Mbonambi and Kwagga Smith rubbed salt into the New Zealand wound.<\/p>\n

Cam Roigard's spectacular consolation try was the only reason for cheer as the All Blacks now head to Germany for \ufeffa training camp ahead of the September 9 tournament opener against hosts France in Paris.<\/p>\n

"An extraordinary scoreline here at Twickenham," Cox said.<\/p>\n

"How do you recover from this? An embarrassing night for the men in black. The world champions have obliterated New Zealand. What a statement."<\/p>\n

In front of 80,000 fans, South Africa's set piece pressure was relentless and an All Blacks side with more than 1000 caps was unhinged.<\/p>\n

The scoreline smashed South Africa's previous biggest win over New Zealand, 17-0 in 1928.<\/p>\n

It also gave South Africa the No.1 ranking, at least until Ireland plays Samoa on Sunday (AEST).<\/p>\n

Both teams could potentially meet again in the World Cup quarter-finals, and if they do South Africa has the momentum after a massive marker.<\/p>\n

All five Springboks tries were converted by Mannie Libbok, who silenced his critics with a perfect record on the night after making only half of his kicks in his previous two Tests.<\/p>\n

The start of the Test was a complete turnaround from Auckland, when the All Blacks blasted to a 17-0 lead in less than 20 minutes and took charge.<\/p>\n

Any relief for the All Blacks was brief due to errors.<\/p>\n

Desperation turned to indiscipline and referee Matthew Carley, after penalising the All Blacks six times (to none by South Africa) picked Barrett to sin bin. <\/p>\n

Moments later, a seventh penalty prompted Carley to yellow card captain Sam Cane as the wheels began to wheel off for New Zealand.<\/p>\n

"We're really disappointed with how we performed tonight," Cane said. <\/p>\n

"They were dominant in all facets. Our discipline really hurt us. It's a game that we're going to have to learn a lot from. We're going to learn quickly but I'd much rather we have it now than in a few week's time.<\/p>\n

"Our feet are now \ufefffirmly on the ground and we've got a lot of work to do in the next couple of weeks. The only good that can come out of it is if we have a good, hard review and are really honest about the areas that weren't up to scratch.
