The Boomers<\/a> have stamped their authority in their opening match of the FIBA Basketball World Cup<\/a> with a convincing 98-72 win over Finland.<\/p>\n

Trailing by five at half time, Australia's s\ufeffecond half offence was superb, with Paddy Mills (25 points and eight rebounds), Josh Giddey (14 points, nine rebounds, eight assists) starring for the Boomers.<\/p>\n

The Group E\ufeff sides put on a physical battle, but it was Australia whose defensive pressure withstood Finland early, taking the game into their own hands in the second half.<\/p>\n

It was a promising but slow start for the Boomer\ufeffs, who went with their small lineup early, soon squashed by Finland, who piled on six unanswered points before the Australians steered the ship with Dante Exum and Joe Ingles checking in.<\/p>\n

The first quarter was an arm wrestle with no side able to take control, until Finland broke away late to take a four point lead into the first break.<\/p>\n

Josh Green did not check in to the game until the second quarter, with questions raised over his ankle injury, as the Boomers struggled to slow down Finland's dominance as they extended their lead.<\/p>\n

Matisse Thybulle guarded Finland's Lauri Markkanen early but was taken off the court after his third foul, to preserve him for the second half.<\/p>\n

Patty Mills remained busy in the second term, as the Australians played catch up and found their rhythm heading into the main break, coming from eight points down to snatch a five point lead at half time.<\/p>\n

But it was after half time that the Boomers flexed their muscles, managing to take a 16 point lead into the final break, holding Finland to a mere 14 total points for the third quarter.<\/p>\n

The final term saw the Boomers outscore Finland 28 to 18, \ufeffnotching their first win of the tournament.<\/p>\n

Giddey spoke post game, praising his side's fightback which saw the game turn in their favour.<\/p>\n

"Start of the third quarter was really good, we stretched our lead\ufeff," Giddey said on ESPN.<\/p>\n

"It's a great start to the tournament for us and a good win and we've got to back it up in two nights, we've got a top team in Germany, so another tough test."<\/p>\n

For Finland, forward Lauri Markkanen scored 19 points, eight rebounds, and four assists in his own dominant performance, despite his side falling away late.<\/p>\n
