Wallaroos forward Sera Naiqama \ufeffbelieves the team's revolt against Rugby Australia<\/a> has already acted as a "catalyst" for change in the women's game.<\/p>\n

Australian rugby stars shared an explosive letter directed at RA on social media on Sunday<\/a>, which Naiqama said was sparked by a video featuring Abbey Lewis, the partner of Wallabies star Carter Gordon.<\/p>\n

The since deleted video, shared on an RA social media channel, showed Lewis flying from Melbourne to Sydney to farewell Gordon for France.<\/p>\n

\"Wallaroos<\/p>\n

Wallaroos players, meanwhile, were left "crying and distressed at the gate"<\/a> in July after not being able to board a plane back home from Canada to Australia.<\/p>\n

"It kind of all blew up for us," Naiqama said on Stan Sport's Rugby Heaven<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"But what I do want to say is that it has been a catalyst for a very important conversation. And right now there is a cohort of players that are communicating openly and fluidly with Rugby Australia and we're chatting… what sparked it?<\/p>\n

"A social media post that we saw. It kind of showed us a little bit of where I guess some resourcing was going. Whether that's true or not – I don't want to make this about the social media post. I want to say that social media post has been used as a catalyst for an important conversation and that's where we are."<\/p>\n

Wallabies legend Tim Horan said Lewis had been put in an unfortunate situation.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I actually thought it was a little bit unfair because I've heard that she actually paid for her flight to go from Melbourne to Sydney," Horan said.<\/p>\n

\"Gordon's<\/p>\n

"Stay the night with Carter Gordon before the Wallabies fly out to Rugby World Cup. So I thought that was a little bit unfair when she's paid for her way up.<\/p>\n

"But also I'm all for the girls getting paid more."<\/p>\n

Former Wal\ufefflabies forward Stephen Hoiles described the Lewis post as "the straw that broke the camel's back."<\/p>\n

"And I think if you're a female aspiring player or you're a Wallaroo, you're sitting there and you've been told for a long period of time, 'we don't have the money, we don't have this'," Hoiles said.<\/p>\n

"But the game is spending a lot at the moment, we spend a lot of money on recruits (in the men's game). We spend a lot of money moving coaches on and bringing coaches in. So it was a slap in the face to the Wallaroos, regardless of the fact of who paid for what.<\/p>\n

"I just think when we're doing these things, Rugby Australia, when we're posting, there's got to be a bit more humility in the stuff that we're putting out to the media and that lacked a little bit of class.<\/p>\n

"The fact that Rugby Australia shared it, nothing against the girls that did it because they're supporting their partners going to the World Cup.<\/p>\n

"So it's not on them."<\/p>\n

RA say they are on a path towards joining New Zealand and England and making the Wallaroos \ufefffully professional.<\/p>\n

The Wallaroos are ranked fifth in the world and are coached by a part-timer in school teacher Jay Tregonning\ufeff.<\/p>\n

"No disrespect but they're not performing against the best teams in the world because they're not on an even playing field with training level," Hoiles said.<\/p>\n

"They're not fulltime… it's not (the complaints) about business class (travel). It's not about getting the perks of being a professional footy player. It's about being able to become a fulltime footy player and give your absolute best."<\/p>\n

\"Wallaroos<\/p>\n

Hoiles, who will coach Randwick in Saturday's Shute Shield final against Northern Suburbs (live on Stan Sport), believed Australia's successful women's sevens program showed what was possible for the Wallaroos.<\/p>\n

"They went through this probably eight years ago. They went fulltime before any team in the world as a result, they won Olympic gold medals," Hoiles said.<\/p>\n

"They bring an enormous amount of revenue and that's the sort of counterargument – like everything has to make commercial sense.<\/p>\n

"But I completely understand and respect that until we give the girls a chance to be as good as the opposition, we can't sit here and judge them and say 'you're not bringing enough money' because they're not on an even playing field."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
