Australian Stewart McSweyn \ufeffwas advanced to the final of the men's 5000 metres at the world athletics championships<\/a> on Friday morning (AEST) after he tripped over a rival late in his race.<\/p>\n

With just over two laps remaining in heat one, German Sam Parsons fell amid congestion. McSweyn, who was on Parsons' heels, tripped over him and took a nasty tumble, before dragging himself off the track and struggling home in 19th place in the time of 13:56.81.<\/p>\n

Despite not finishing in the top eight in his heat, the referee progressed McSweyn to the final because the Tasmanian was deemed to have been disadvantaged by Parsons.<\/p>\n

Norwegian Jakob Ingebrigsten was also caught in the chaos with McSweyn's fall forcing the Olympic champion onto the in-field. Ingebrigsten finished third in his heat in 13:36.21 and was not disqualified for stepping into the in-field because the referee decided he had no other option.<\/p>\n

The runner who sparked the chaos, Parsons, battled home in 20th place in 14:03.14, and was not given a spot in the final.<\/p>\n

"That is such a shame," said commentator Rob Walker moments after McSweyn's fall.<\/p>\n

"I watched him time and again having to put his elbows out.<\/p>\n

"He forced Ingebrigsten to run on the in-field. I don't think that will cause a problem (for Ingebrigsten) because\ufeff it wasn't his fault."<\/p>\n

Immediately after the race, Australian middle-distance champion Tamysn Manou predicted\ufeff McSweyn would be advanced to the final.<\/p>\n

"I think Stewy McSweyn\ufeff's going to be reinstated here because there's nothing he can do about that," Manou said in commentary.<\/p>\n

"When the German athlete, Parsons, tripped over, he (McSweyn) fell straight (down). A really heavy fall for him."<\/p>\n

McSweyn has had a gruelling world championships campaign in Budapest, which began with the\ufeff 28-year-old bowing out of the men's 1500 metres in the heats. He finished seventh in his heat in 3:36.01 on day one of the Budapest major.<\/p>\n

Another dramatic moment on day six of the world championships saw Rhydian Cowley, one of four Australian captains for the Budapest major, withdraw from the men's 35-kilometre race walk after collapsing in oppressive conditions. Cowley collapsed with only seven kilometres remaining and retired from the race.<\/p>\n
