Former Collingwood president Eddie McGuire<\/a> has called on the AFL<\/a> to appoint a head of football ahead of the finals.<\/p>\n

\ufeffSpeaking in the interest of all 18 clubs and the football public, McGuire demanded the league nominate an authority figure to manage potential issues across the final series.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffThe AFL must in the next seven days appoint a head of football to the Australian Football League," McGuire told Nine's Footy Classified<\/em><\/a> on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

"It's as simple as that.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffIt doesn't have to be the long-term person but the game is crying out at club level and all the way through football to have a leader.<\/p>\n

"Surely, somewhere at AFL House or through the AFL system, there is somebody who can take control of AFL football through the finals series."<\/p>\n

The demand comes after a controversial goal umpiring error in the final minutes of Adelaide's one-point loss to Sydney cost the Crows a finals berth<\/a> in 2023.<\/p>\n

"What we've just seen there is a \ufeffteam with a $60 million budget has been put out unfairly of the finals and everyone knows that," McGuire said.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffThere's no witch-hunt required, the umpire [at fault] has copped his whack but we can't let this go on any further."<\/p>\n

After a spate of other incidents across the season including the league's crackdown on umpire dissent, several interchange infringements and confusion around dangerous tackles, all of which weren't addressed publicly by the AFL, McGuire said the appointment of a footy boss would provide "the start of the solution".<\/p>\n

"\ufeffThis is the week where you go to clubs and you ring them if you're the head of football, and you say 'We are going to put you under the scrutiny that you pick the best possible sides to keep the integrity of the last game'," he said.<\/p>\n

"In the build-up to the finals, you ring the umpires, 'Right, be aware, if there is a close decision, go to the review'."<\/p>\n

Geelong champion Jimmy Bartel<\/a> agreed\ufeff.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffYou can get the jump on a lot of these issues," he said.<\/p>\n

"Using the dissent rule, \ufeffyou can do the ring around to the footy clubs and go, 'Look, you've all been warned, cut the crap, don't whinge if there is a 50-metre penalty because you've all been told'.<\/p>\n

"But also, \ufeffthere's the public-facing nature of it. We show the AFL logo, stand out in front of that [and] explain things. Not everyone will agree but people will then feel like they're coming along with the journey, clubs will feel a bit happier, you're there for the fans as well [and] not just for the AFL.<\/p>\n
