Eddie Jones<\/a> has revealed exactly how he plans to lean on former All Blacks<\/a> coach Steve Hansen<\/a> to aid the Wallabies'<\/a> run at the Rugby World Cup<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Jones called on his former opposite to be an observer in the Wallabies camp this week ahead of their Rugby World Cup warm-up against France on Monday.<\/p>\n

Before clarification came that Hansen was not necessarily a part of the coaching staff, the move drew widespread attention across New Zealand.<\/p>\n

All Blacks hooker Dane Coles' visceral reaction made waves<\/a> and the country's prime minister Chris Hipkins joked the legendary coach's citizenship be revoked.<\/p>\n

Hansen joins the Wallabies in a relatively informal capacity, something Jones described as like sharing a drink with a friend.<\/p>\n

"I've coached against Steve since I think 1998, so I've got a long relationship \u2013 we enjoy each other's company," said Jones.<\/p>\n

"We always wanted this week, particularly, it's a reset week for us. We've been through the Rugby Championship, done our Australian responsibilities, and now it's a reset.<\/p>\n

"We've brought in Steve to have a look at what we're doing. It's purely like a mate coming in, having a beer \u2013 'What do you think? Where can we improve?'"<\/p>\n

Asked what areas Hansen would look at, Jones explained, "There's two main areas: training quality, which is our way of improving. And leadership of the team.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"So Steve is having a look at both of those areas. Every time he speaks there is some wisdom in what he says.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"When he says something, we are listening to him and how we can improve what we are doing. We're looking to see if we can use his advice to do that."<\/p>\n

Hansen himself clarified his role after reports emerged on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

"They're looking good actually, they're a good young team, we're working hard and I'd just like to put everybody's mind at rest that I haven't joined the Wallabies for the Rugby World Cup," he told New Zealand radio station Newstalk ZB.<\/p>\n

"I'm only here for about three or four days at the request of Eddie, a good mate of mine, just to give him some feedback on what he's doing, as opposed to anything else.<\/p>\n

"Rugby is bigger than all of us, so happy to do that."<\/p>\n

Hansen also confirmed he wasn't working for the team, per se.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"The thing is, if you're working for someone you're getting paid, so I'm not working for anyone," he explained.<\/p>\n

"I'm just here as a friend."<\/p>\n

Jones said the reaction from the Wallabies players had been positive to Hansen's arrival.<\/p>\n

The team is one of the youngest at this year's Rugby World Cup with an average age of 26.<\/p>\n

Indeed, 26 of the 33-man squad have played less than 10 Tests.<\/p>\n

"They like good people coming into the camp," said Jones of the squad.<\/p>\n

"They want to get better and they can see the value of Steve. Just look at his Test record. He coached 200 Tests. For the All Blacks he won 80-plus per cent, I think 87 per cent.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"They like good people coming into the camp and he's a good person. The attitude has been really positive."<\/p>\n

Hansen isn't the only bystander in the growing support crew.<\/p>\n

American teacher Doug Lemov, whose book "Reconnect" Jones read earlier this year, has also joined the fold.<\/p>\n

"We've also got Doug Lemov who we've used previously to help with the coaches improve their coaching," Jones added.<\/p>\n

"It's a really important professional development time for us to just get a little bit better before we go into the World Cup."<\/p>\n
