Rabbitohs<\/a> coach Jason Demetriou<\/a> has launched a wholehearted defence of Latrell Mitchell<\/a> after the under-fire star last week necked a beer at a concert days out from South Sydney's defeat to Newcastle.<\/p>\n

Demetriou and South Sydney\ufeff chief executive Blake Solly fronted for a press conference on Wednesday morning following the departure of assistant coach Sam Burgess<\/a>, as the club fights a perception that it is in crisis.<\/p>\n

Demetriou was peppered with questions about\ufeff claims of preferential treatment of Mitchell and representative playmaker Cody Walker.<\/p>\n

Those claims erupted after vision of Mitchell chugging a beer at a country music concert last Wednesday night went viral.<\/p>\n

"There was probably half of the NRL<\/a> at the Luke Combs concert," Demetriou said.<\/p>\n

"Latrell was extremely fortunate to be brought on stage and spend a moment with one of the greatest country singers in the world at the moment. He slugged a few shots of beer and chucked the can in the air, but he was the first won in the building on Thursday morning. He trained the house down, his prep during his injury time has been first-class.<\/p>\n

"He lives the standards that we talk about, he drives the standards inside these four walls."<\/p>\n

The Sydney Morning Herald's Andrew Webster reports that nobody in power at the Rabbitohs<\/a> took Mitchell to task over the concert incident.<\/p>\n

Four days later, he was virtually unsighted as the Rabbitohs lost 29-10 to the Knights in Newcastle.<\/p>\n

\ufeffWhen his presence was<\/em> felt, it was because of a push and shove with Tyson Frizell, and late in the game a cheap shot on his NSW Blues teammate that lumped him with a one-match ban.<\/p>\n

\ufeffThe Rabbitohs have a bye this week before meeting arch-rivals the Roosters at Sydney Olympic Park in the last round of the regular season, in a game that will decide if South Sydney reaches the finals.<\/p>\n

Webster made a telling revelation amid the claims of \ufeffmutiny ripping through the club, revealing that during a video session Mitchell snapped at captain Cameron Murray for not passing him the ball when he wanted it.<\/p>\n
