T\ufeffhe ugly mid-air tackle on Reuben Garrick<\/a> has resulted in the Manly Sea Eagles<\/a> speedster fracturing his back, scans have revealed in the wake of Friday night's clash with the Warriors<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Fullback Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad\ufeff injured Garrick when the Manly No.1 leapt to catch the ball during the clash at Brookvale Oval.<\/p>\n

Daly Cherry-Evans fired off a field goal attempt, it was charged down and Nicoll-Klokstad wiped out the legs of Garrick as he jumped for the footy.<\/p>\n

Garrick landed heavily, fractured his back and almost certainly won't play again this season.<\/p>\n

Controversy has erupted given Nicoll-Klokstad was neither penalised nor charged for the incident.\ufeff<\/p>\n

If the Sea Eagles received a penalty, they would have banged over a penalty goal to take a 24-22 lead with eight minutes left on the clock.<\/p>\n

Instead, \ufeffthe Warriors scored a try through Marata Niukore less than a minute later, before banking a 29-22 win.<\/p>\n

"It was ridiculous, it was absolutely ridiculous," said Manly coach Anthony Seibold in his post-game press conference.<\/p>\n

"That's a penalty every day of the week. The rule says it's not because the ball bounced and wasn't a kick, but how many times do we pull tackles up for a slight crusher or give the penalty for someone slipping up from chest to jaw?<\/p>\n

"Fair dinkum, let's be serious.<\/p>\n

"So we go two points in front, they get the ball back, Reuben can't run, we make a poor defensive error, but our fullback can't run and we're saying it's not a dangerous tackle."<\/p>\n

\ufeffManly finished the round in 12th on the ladder with 25 points and can no longer reach the finals in Seibold's first season in charge.<\/p>\n

The Sea Eagles would have a huge chance of scraping into the finals if they had beaten the Warriors, given they're scheduled to meet the embattled Bulldogs and Tigers in their last two regular-season matches.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"It was a dangerous tackle, he's injured, he couldn't finish the game and it's our season on the line, so I am pissed off about it," Seibold added.<\/p>\n

"I'm just sick of it because I bite my tongue. I'm not a coach that comes out and has a whinge, but I'm sick of it.<\/p>\n

"It is concerning for me because I don't understand the rules anymore.<\/p>\n

"We give a penalty away for the slightest slip-up from chest to chin or the slightest bit of weight on somebody's neck. It's ridiculous."<\/p>\n

NRL head of football Graham Annesley defended the referee's decision to not penalise the Warriors.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"It's a subjective decision. He lands on his back. There are players who are tackled and land on their back in a whole range of situations, or land awkwardly," Annesley said.<\/p>\n

"Injury alone is not a determination of whether the rules have been breached or not.<\/p>\n

"(Players) can get injured in legitimate tackles, so you have to look at this particular situation and look at the circumstances. Was there any lack of care taken by Nicoll-Klokstad? I don't think there was."<\/p>\n

But Annesley also hinted at a potential rule change.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"We have to make sure there are no unintended consequences of a rule change," he said.<\/p>\n

"We have to change the rule in a way that is not going to inhibit some of these fantastic tries or punish players that are trying to stop these tries.<\/p>\n

"We'll review all the rules and if there is a way of making the game safer \u2014 we have always defaulted to that.<\/p>\n

"(But) under the existing rule, there was no requirement on the referees to form a view that that was a breach of the rules.<\/p>\n

"There was no high tackle, there was no late contact, he wasn't early, he didn't get to him before he had possession of the ball. So which rule has he breached?"<\/p>\n

Garrick has been filling in for Tom Trbojevic at fullback after the 2021 Dally M Medal winner suffered a season-ending pectoral injury in State of Origin II<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Garrick is expected to be replaced at fullback by Kaeo Weekes or Tolutau Koula for Manly's game against Canterbury\ufeff at Sydney Olympic Park on Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
