Steve Smith<\/a>\ufeff has revealed he played the majority of Australia's recent Ashes<\/a> campaign with a wounded wrist \u2014 the one which ruled him out of the upcoming tour of South Africa.<\/p>\n

Smith was scrubbed from Australia's white-ball tour against the Proteas due to a torn left wrist, with Ashton Turner replacing him in the T20 squad and Marnus Labuschagne taking his spot in the one-day set-up.<\/p>\n

Smith, who's now wearing a splint, is expected to return ahead of Australia's one-day series in India beginning in late September, during the lead-up to the 50-over World Cup.\ufeff<\/p>\n

The former Australian Test captain told Fox Cricket he suffered the injury while fielding during the second Ashes Test at Lord's<\/a>, in which he compiled 110 in Australia's first dig en route to a 43-run win<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He received treatment on his wrist, including a \ufeffcortisone injection, ahead of the fourth Test in Manchester.<\/p>\n

"I did it at Lord's. I don't actually know the moment, it was when we were in the field," Smith told Fox Cricket this week.<\/p>\n

"It wasn't until that night I was like, 'Geez, what have I done here? It's a bit sore'.<\/p>\n

"I played the next game and then I had a cortisone before Old Trafford (where the fourth Test was played).<\/p>\n

"I got back (to Australia) and I was like, 'Still not quite right. I still can't do a lot of things properly'.<\/p>\n

"I had another scan. There was a small tear in the tendon as well as a couple of other things."<\/p>\n

Despite taking a 2-0 lead in the series through a remarkable win in Edgbaston<\/a> and a controversial victory at Lord's, the Australians failed to win<\/a> their first Ashes series in the United Kingdom since 2001.<\/p>\n

The 2-2 series result meant they retained the Ashes urn, having won the 2021-22 series in Australia, but the missed opportunity has been tough for them to cop, especially the veterans nearing the ends of their careers.<\/p>\n

"I thought we probably had all the tools in the kit bag to go ever there and win, and we weren't satisfied with drawing the series again. Obviously we did that last time," Smith said.<\/p>\n

"We wanted to win and do one better, and we weren't able to do that.<\/p>\n

"So overall it was a bit disappointing."<\/p>\n

Australia will play three T20s in South Africa with the first taking place on\ufeff August 30 (AEST), before five one-dayers follow.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
