Spanish<\/a> football federation president Luis Rubiales has come under fire for kissing a player on the lips during post-match celebrations at the FIFA Women's World Cup<\/a>.<\/p>\n

After Spain beat England in a tight 1-0 win<\/a>, midfielder Jenni Hermoso celebrated with her team on the podium where she accepted her medal from FIFA president Gianni Infantino.<\/p>\n

As she made her way across the podium she met Rubiales, who hugged her before lifting her off her feet.<\/p>\n

The pair exchanged words before he grabbed the back of her head, kissed her, then patted her on the back.<\/p>\n

The move has received widespread criticism. Hermoso stated on Spanish network La 1 when quizzed on the moment \u2013 "Yeah, I did not enjoy that".<\/p>\n

Footage of the podium celebrations showed Rubiales kissing most Spanish players on the cheek and lifting others into the air.<\/p>\n

The football boss spoke on Spanish radio MARCA where he shrugged off the moment.<\/p>\n

"The kiss with Jenni? Idiots are everywhere," said Rubiales.<\/p>\n

"When two people have an unimportant gesture of affection, we can't listen to idiocy."<\/p>\n

A Spanish Football Association statement circulated in the wake of the incident which downplayed the moment.<\/p>\n

"This was a totally spontaneous and mutual gesture due to the immense joy that winning the World Cup gave us," it read.<\/p>\n

"The president and I have a great relationship, his behaviour with everyone has been excellent and it was a natural gesture of affection and gratitude.<\/p>\n

"We have won a World Cup and we are not going to lose sight of what is important."<\/p>\n

Former Australian international Craig Foster took to social media to decry the act and called for the football boss to be sacked.<\/p>\n

"Women in sport are daily subject to an extreme power differential, objectification, harassment, sexual abuse and an absence of agency and power," he wrote.<\/p>\n
