Alex Bolt has become the first Australian male to advance to the second round of the Australian Open.<\/p>\n

The South Australian native, who's ranked No.174 in the world, defeated Slovakian Norbert Gombos 6-2,6-2, 4-6, 6-3.<\/p>\n

After claiming the opening two sets comfortably, Bolt was forced to hold off a fightback from his Slovakian opponent who found a way to send the match to a fourth set. Fortunately, Bolt held his nerve in the fourth set. <\/p>\n

The 28-year-old now faces a big test on Wednesday as he gets ready to meet either world No.19 Grigor Dimitrov or 2014 US Open champ Marin Cilic, who face-off later today. <\/p>\n

"It's amazing [being back]," he said after the match.<\/p>\n

"I've had some great memories here in the past. To come out here today and get the first round win under my belt, I'm just over the moon.<\/p>\n

"It's been a bit of a chaotic last few months. The preparation for everyone hasn't been ideal.<\/p>\n

"I'm just happy I'm playing good tennis."<\/p>\n

In other matches, Aussie fan favourite John Millman was unable to advance past the first round<\/a> of the Australian Open for the first time since 2015 after losing in a five-set thriller to world No.80 Corentin Moutet.<\/p>\n

The Australian held a two-sets-to-one lead but Frenchman Moutet stormed back to rock the vocal Court 3 crowd with an upset 6-4 6-7 (4-7) 3-6 6-2 6-3 victory.<\/p>\n
