England<\/a> players and staff are "heartbroken" as they come to grips with losing the FIFA Women's World Cup<\/a> final.<\/p>\n

The Lionesses went down 1-0 to Spain in\ufeff Sunday's tournament decider<\/a> in Sydney, with Spanish captain Olga Carmona's brilliant first-half goal the decisive moment.<\/p>\n

For England it means the World Cup drought will continue. The nation has not won a football World Cup since the victorious men's team in 1966.<\/p>\n

"This is really hard to take. We gave it everything," England star Millie Bright said after Sunday's loss.<\/p>\n

"We had chances, we hit the bar, but we just didn't have the final edge and they got theirs in back of the net.<\/p>\n

"We're absolutely heartbroken. We gave everything. Unfortunately we just weren't there."<\/p>\n

Midfielder Georgia Stanway was equally shattered after the defeat, bravely fronting up to speak to media about the loss.<\/p>\n

"It's gutting, it's devastating, but that's football," Stanway said.<\/p>\n

"It's hard to watch another team celebrate when it's your goal and your dream. When the dust settles, we'll be really proud of this.<\/p>\n

"We've faced a lot in this tournament, before the tournament, people probably didn't have us written to be in this situation, so to reach a World Cup final is an achievement alone.<\/p>\n

"We hope we've inspired many many people. We're the Lionesses, so we won't stop what we're doing, we'll continue to break barriers, we'll continue to push on."<\/p>\n

England reached the final by beating Australia 3-1 in the semi finals. Before Sunday, the Matildas were the only team to have beaten England under the coaching of Sarina Wiegman.<\/p>\n

That was a 2-0 friendly defeat in April. Sunday's loss was the second under \ufeffWiegman, who also lost the 2019 World Cup final when coaching Netherlands.<\/p>\n

"Of course it feels really bad now, very disappointing," Wiegman said after Sunday's game.<\/p>\n

"You go into the final and you want to give everything and then you lose it.<\/p>\n

"That happens in sports but what we have done, how we have shown ourselves, who we are, how we want to play as a team, overcoming so many challenges – I think we can be so proud of ourselves, although it doesn't feel like it at the moment."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
