Matildas<\/a> coach Tony Gustavsson has defended his selection of injured Matildas striker striker Kyah Simon, revealing she suffered two injury setbacks during FIFA Women's World Cup<\/a> preparations, including a major one after the squad selection window had closed.<\/p>\n

Simon tore her ACL last October, and was selected in the Matildas squad to be a "game changer" off the bench.<\/p>\n

Gustavsson said she was "phenomenal" in pre-World Cup camp, before she suffered her first\u00a0"minor" setback.<\/p>\n

"She had a minor, small injury \u2026 she was selected to be available and then in the last two weeks of training and pre-camp, she was phenomenal," he said after the Matildas' 2-0 loss to Sweden in the third-place playoff.<\/p>\n

"She played in 11 a-side and did a really good job. Then, after the selection up in the Gold Coast, she had a minor setback.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Just a minor one, a little knock, and we knew it was not going to be a problem \u2013 so that's why I kept her (in the squad).<\/p>\n

"And then after the window (closed), she had another setback, where she was just able to take a PK (penalty)."<\/p>\n

Gustavsson didn't elaborate on what the setback was, but said the marathon 20-penalty shootout against France was the only time he could have used her.<\/p>\n

"I think you saw she was next to me, in that technical area for that France game, when I explained why I didn't do that. But that's the only part I could have used her," he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
