Calls to Quade Cooper<\/a> to inform him he'd not been selected for the Rugby World Cup<\/a> were fruitless, Wallabies<\/a> coach Eddie Jones<\/a> has confirmed.<\/p>\n

Cooper was among the casualties in the 33-man squad<\/a>, which also omitted former captain Michael Hooper<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Instead of the veteran fly-half, Jones picked 22-year-old up-and-comer Carter Gordon and surprise utility back-up Ben Donaldson.<\/p>\n

Cooper, who had only just recovered from a blown ACL, made a cameo in this year's Rugby Championship.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, his final act was dropping the ball as the Wallabies sought to take back the lead in their agonising loss to the All Blacks in Dunedin.<\/p>\n

Having since been dropped from the Wallabies, it's likely that could be his last memory in the gold jersey.<\/p>\n

Jones and other Rugby Australia officials had sought to reach Cooper prior to the squad announcement.<\/p>\n

Asked why he thought Cooper hadn't returned his calls, Jones explained, "Because I think he's very upset mate.<\/p>\n

"I've tried to mate, but we can't get hold of him."<\/p>\n

\"Time<\/p>\n

Jones was asked to clarify the situation with Cooper but bristled at those questions.<\/p>\n

"I don't know why you're going back to that," said Jones.<\/p>\n

"That's probably reflective of Australian rugby, we've got to move on.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"We're moving on to a World Cup with a great young squad and you're still talking about players we haven't selected.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"We've tried to ring him mate, that's all I can do."<\/p>\n

Jones was also queried about Michael Hooper's omission, which he said was due in part to his calf injury.<\/p>\n

"Guys, we've moved on," Jones continued.<\/p>\n

\"Quade<\/p>\n

"That's all been done and dusted. We've moved on. If the players are unhappy about the selection process, then so be it. We're moving on with a young new squad that's going to take Australian rugby forward.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"You've got to understand that what we've had over the last eight years hasn't been good enough. It hasn't been good enough and we want the opportunity for these young players to go forward.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I'm disappointed if players are upset but all I can do is ring them. If they don't take your phone call you can't talk to them.<\/p>\n

"If I ring them and they won't ring back \u2013 what do you want me to do? What do you want me to do? What do you want me to do? Tell me."<\/p>\n

Cooper was not even selected for the Australia A side that will play Portugal in France in the lead-up to the Rugby World Cup.<\/p>\n

The Wallabies' only warm-up match will see them face France on August 28 before contests against pool rivals Georgia, Fiji, Wales, and Portugal.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
