Cowboys<\/a> coach Todd Payten fired back at a reporter who questioned his team's attitude at training during the week leading into their loss to the Sharks<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Cowboys wilted despite leading 12-6 after the first quarter of the game, but then their defence collapsed, letting in 26 unanswered points to leave their season on life support.\ufeff<\/p>\n

In his post-match press conference, Payten was asked if\ufeff his "relaxed" approach to training before the match had anything to do with the loss.<\/p>\n

"We hear the preparation this week was pretty relaxed, was that a mistake?" the journalist asked.<\/p>\n

"Were you at training?" Payten asked.<\/p>\n

\"Drinkwater<\/p>\n

"I think I heard some pre-match conversations, Jason said it as well that it was a bit more a relaxed week," the reporter replied.<\/p>\n

"Our training sessions were short, sharp and intense. Our group respond better when they are relaxed," Payten said.<\/p>\n

"If I'm amped up or I am consistently in to our players we know that pushes my energy on to them and they tighten up.<\/p>\n

"There was no mucking around or hijinx, everyone was focused and got their job done. We were just outplayed in the end.<\/p>\n

"We put ourselves under some pressure and played a good team."<\/p>\n

Payten paid tribute to forward Jeremiah Nanai\ufeff, who had to endure a tough time on the field, after suffering a high-grade AC joint injury against the Eels in Round 21.<\/p>\n

"It was pretty brave from the kid, he needed to get needled to train, needled before the game and at halftime," Payten said.<\/p>\n

"Makes us a better team so he will be sore. He's got eight days to get himself going again before we play the Dolphins on Friday night."<\/p>\n

The Cowboys are in real danger of missing the top eight and currently sit on 28 points\ufeff, while the Knights and Rabbitohs sit on 29 and 28 respectively with a game in hand.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
