Max Purcell scored the biggest victory of his career, while Alex de Minaur<\/a> crashed out at the US Open warm up event in Cincinnati.<\/p>\n

Purcell \ufeffdefeated world No.7 Casper Ruud in under two hours to advance to the third round with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 victory, taking the Sydney player's win tally to seven from eight matches over the past fortnight.<\/p>\n

It was a huge feat for Purcell, who had played a top 10 player just once prior.<\/p>\n

Ruud has been one of the form players of the tour, making three of the last six Grand Slam finals.<\/p>\n

After losing the second set, Purcell defended three break points to set up a 5-4 lead before he notched victory off the back of a couple of long forehands by Ruud.<\/p>\n

Purcell\ufeff has continued his rise in the rankings since being outside the top 200 a year ago, with the Aussie now in the top 80.<\/p>\n

Purcell advances to the round of 16, where he will face either world No.10 Frances Tiafoe or three-time grand-slam champion Stan Wawrinka.<\/p>\n

\ufeffElsewhere, Australian No.1 de Minaur fell in two sets to French veteran Gael Monfils.<\/p>\n

Monfils will meet the winner of the match between No.2 seed Novak Djokovic and Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.<\/p>\n
