The AFL<\/a> has confirmed it will bring in a $250 payout limit for round-by-round betting ahead of the 2023 Brownlow Medal, in hopes of steering clear of a repeat of last year's betting scandal.<\/p>\n

The new regulation comes after league umpire Michael Pell allegedly placed bets on the 2022 Brownlow medal<\/a>, with the now-axed official still under police investigation.<\/p>\n

It also prohibits any AFL staff from placing bets and allows for on-the-spot audits at any time.<\/p>\n

The Victorian gambling regulator says the new measures are "adequate" enough to uphold the league's integrity\ufeff.<\/p>\n

"We have determined the AFL's control improvements are adequate and determined a prohibition on the 2023 Brownlow round-by-round voting is not required at this time," Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission chairman Fran Thorn said.<\/p>\n

Thorn also confirmed that all betting data would be handed over to the commission during the count, which will be held next month.<\/p>\n

"We are satisfied with the immediate control improvements, but will continue to monitor the implementation of additional priority measures, including a real-time transaction monitoring system, the prohibition of betting providers over compliance concerns, a monthly audit of unapproved bet types and the categorising of vulnerable player groups at a higher risk of being compromised, such as young players and those at the end of their careers," Thorn said.<\/p>\n

Victoria Police's investigation of Pell, alongside three other men continues under the Sports Integrity Unit,\ufeff after PointsBet notified the league of suspicious betting.<\/p>\n

Pell umpired 16 AFL matches across the 2022 season, with \ufeffreports alleging that he placed bets on at least 10 of those games.<\/p>\n

If charges are laid and the group are found guilty, the four men involved could face up to 10 years imprisonment\ufeff.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
