Only one thing had been missing from this home FIFA Women's World Cup<\/a> \u2014 a moment that at one stage looked impossible \u2014 a goal to superstar striker Sam Kerr<\/a>.<\/p>\n

After six thrilling matches, more than 570 hours of gameplay and various wayward attempts, the electrifying moment finally came in the 63rd minute of Australia's semi-final loss \ufeffto England<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But for all its brilliance, the lightning dribble and rocket-fuelled long-range shot to level the match<\/a> was, in the end, only a consolation goal for the nation.<\/p>\n

"Knowing Sam, she probably thinks that goal means nothing \u2014 wasn't worth anything," Matildas<\/a> coach Tony Gustavsson told media post-match.<\/p>\n

"She wants to win, she's a winner. I'm happy for her that she got that goal, I think it proves who Sam Kerr is and what she can do.<\/p>\n

"It was a world-class goal and it says a lot about the qualities that Sam Kerr has [and her] individual brilliance."\ufeff<\/p>\n

Fronting up after the loss in the mixed zone, an \ufeffinternational reporter tried to cheer up the otherwise deflated Kerr.<\/p>\n

"It was a great goal," he said.\ufeff<\/p>\n

But Kerr was not going to hear it.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Yeah, I guess. It really doesn't matter now," Kerr replied.<\/p>\n

"All I can think about is disappointment right now."<\/p>\n

Gustavsson admitted that his side had three "sitters" towards the end of the match that could have \ufefflevelled the score at 2-2.<\/p>\n

Instead, England's Alessia Russo went on to seal a 3-1 victory in the 86th minute.<\/p>\n

Kerr accounted for two of these missed chances \u2014 a header sent over the goal in the 82nd minute and a close-range volley sent wide in the 85th.<\/p>\n

"I know that she's upset that she missed the two chances at the end of the game. That's why she's worried, she always wants to score, she looks at herself as a goal scorer, a game-winner. She's going to be upset with that," Gustavsson said.<\/p>\n

"We need to support her, she did everything she could. She dug deep and the fact she was able to play 90 minutes is unreal."<\/p>\n

Kerr expressed her dismay post-match after flashes of hope during the match kept the Matildas' dream of a maiden World Cup final alive.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"There were only a couple of moments in the game and I guess [England] took theirs," she said.<\/p>\n

"I thought it was honestly pretty even. From where I was standing it kind of ebbed and flowed each way.<\/p>\n

"After we scored I thought we were going to go and score another but then they got the momentum back."<\/p>\n

After suffering a calf injury<\/a> on the eve of the tournament, Gustavsson acknowledged Kerr's restricted minutes but did not allow himself to entertain what could have been.<\/p>\n

"Sam Kerr might not be in the form of her life because of that injury, but still, she had a really good performance, and who knows what it could have been like if she was totally healthy\ufeff \u2014 but that's speculation," he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
