A new Pacific Championships involving men's and women's teams from seven nations will take place later this year, with World Cup<\/a> final rematches to kick off the new tournament.<\/p>\n

Details of the Pacific Championships to be played this year and next were announced by the Australian Rugby League<\/a> Commission on Wednesday, with hosting duties to be shared between Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea at the end of this season.<\/p>\n

The men's tournament will be divided across two pools from October 14 , with finals in Hamilton and Port Moresby on November 4-5.<\/p>\n

Two match days will be staged in Australia, two in New Zealand and four in Papua New Guinea.<\/p>\n

"The Pacific Championships mark the beginning of an exciting new phase of international rugby league competition in the Pacific for both women and men," said Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.<\/p>\n

"Geography makes us neighbours, but through sport we build strong and lasting ties across the Pacific family."<\/p>\n

The opening round double-header will be played at Townsville's Queensland Country Bank Stadium, with the Kangaroos playing Samoa and the Jillaroos taking on the Kiwi Ferns.<\/p>\n

The event will mark the first time the Kangaroos and Jillaroos have played in Australia since the 2017 World Cup finals at Suncorp Stadium.<\/p>\n

The 2023 championships will see\ufeff Australia, Cook Islands, Fiji, New Zealand, Samoa and Papua New Guinea take part, but Tonga travels to England for an historic three Test series. It's understood Tonga will play next year and another team will travel to the UK.<\/p>\n

"The Commission's focus on growing the international game will combine with an equally strong desire to grow rugby league in the Pacific," ARL commissioner Kate Jones said.<\/p>\n

"The 2023 Pacific Championships will showcase the best of international rugby league in matches across three countries. Importantly, the international matches will be highlighted by both men's and women's matches.<\/p>\n

"The southern hemisphere tournaments will deliver on the broader NRL Pacific strategy objectives – to create pathways for aspiring athletes, coaches, referees and administrators from the Pacific along with further growing international rugby league."<\/p>\n
