Alex de Minaur<\/a> will lead Australia in the world cup of tennis this year with an eye on revenge.<\/p>\n

The men's world No.12 will look to take his countrymen to victory in the Davis Cup<\/a> for the first time since 2003.<\/p>\n

Last year, the team came up just short, finishing second to Canada who won their maiden title in controversial circumstances when they were given dispensation to compete<\/a>.<\/p>\n

De Minaur will this year be joined by Jordan Thompson (world No.55), Max Purcell (No.70), Thanasi Kokkinakis (No.78) and world No.9 doubles player Matt Ebden.<\/p>\n

Australia will be part of Group B, which also features powerhouses Great Britain, France, and Switzerland.\u00a0<\/p>\n

De Minaur said the demoralising defeat in last year's competition is driving them to go one better in 2023.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"We got so close to being able to lift that Davis Cup trophy, that gave us a lot of fire in the belly to come back and go for more," he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"In Manchester we have a very tough group, a lot of very good players. Very dangerous, players and nations, so it's going to be very tough, we have to come together as a team and hopefully be able to put a strong performance in both the singles and doubles."<\/p>\n

The green and golds will once again be captained by Australian tennis legend Lleyton Hewitt.<\/p>\n

The former world No.1 and two-time grand slam winner said picking the team was challenging.<\/p>\n

"There's been a lot of really good performances not only in singles but also doubles throughout the year," Hewitt said.<\/p>\n

\"Australians<\/p>\n

"It makes decision making for the Davis Cup team and the squad really tough but that's a position that myself, (Tony) Roche and Crabby (Jaymon Crabb) enjoy being in.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"We prefer to have it that way over having limited players to choose from."<\/p>\n

Hewitt hailed De Minaur's rich vein of form and Thompson's purple patch that earned him a call up to the team.<\/p>\n

"Alex de Minaur has played some of his best tennis in Davis Cup, so we're very fortunate to have him spearheading us again going into Manchester," said Hewitt.<\/p>\n

"Jordan Thompson played some really good tennis in Washington only a couple of weeks ago on the hard courts. But also I thought he played one of his best matches he has ever played when he played Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon earlier this year.<\/p>\n

"Max Purcell, he's another player who can play singles or doubles. He's had some big wins in singles this year and got his ranking into a position where he can play all the big tournaments. We all know what a quality doubles player he is as well.<\/p>\n

"Thanasi Kokkinakis, another fantastic ball striker who is capable of playing a lot better tennis than where his ranking's at. He has the firepower to put a lot of players under pressure.<\/p>\n

"And Matt Ebden has played a lot of big matches for us. He played fantastic in Hamburg last year in the doubles. He's had an incredible year and is top 10 in doubles."<\/p>\n

This year's Davis Cup will feature some of the biggest names in tennis.<\/p>\n

Spain has named Carlos Alcaraz in its squad, which will be captained by David Ferrer. That team also features Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Roberto Bautista Agut, and Marcel Granollers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Serbia has confirmed Novak Djokovic's return alongside Laslo Djere, Miomor Kecmanovic, Dusan Lajovic, and Hamad Medjedovic.<\/p>\n

With Spain and Serbia in the same pool, it's all but a given that Alcaraz and Djokovic will go head-to-head in a repeat of their Wimbledon final.<\/p>\n
