Tevita Pangai Junior<\/a> has sent the NRL world into shock after informing his Bulldogs<\/a> teammates that he will retire from the game.<\/p>\n

9News' Danny Weidler confirmed the NSW Blues Origin representative<\/a> will instead pursue a career in boxing.<\/p>\n

"Tevita Pangai Junior will play out the season with Canterbury\ufeff and then quit the game to take up boxing," he said on 9news.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffThis is quite a big surprise in a lot of ways because Tevita had really indicated to the club that he'd like to make a go of his career at Canterbury \ufeff… it might have been at the end of last year he said that unless you could keep his weight down to a certain point, he would quit rugby league and quit the Bulldogs.<\/p>\n

\"Injured<\/p>\n

"I don't know about his weight but he's obviously lost some of that desire … he now has a desire to box and no longer to play rugby league.<\/p>\n

"He's had some boxing \ufeffhistory, he's shown some extreme talent in that sport but it's a massive gamble."\ufeff<\/p>\n

The decision from Pangai Junior has left his mentor – and Sonny Bill Williams' agent – Khoder Nasser, confused.<\/p>\n

"All I know is that he's leaving rugby league to do boxing," Nasser told The Sydney Morning Herald<\/a>.<\/p>\n

"It's absolute madness."<\/p>\n

The news comes on the same day his ex-teammate and good friend Payne Haas re-signed with the Broncos<\/a>. It was only in June that Haas backed Pangai Junior to return for the Blues one day<\/a>. <\/p>\n

"God willing he gets back here, I've got all the confidence in the world in Tevita, he's one of my best mates, so if he's chosen again I know he'll do the job," Haas told Wide World of Sports.<\/p>\n

The prop started for the Bulldogs against Newcastle on the weekend but has been shifted to the bench for Sunday's clash at Canberra. <\/p>\n
