Where exactly will Shane van Gisbergen<\/a> race in 2024? That's the question being asked as a full-time move to NASCAR<\/a> draws closer.<\/p>\n

NASCAR is commonly referenced in relation to the highest competition in North American stock car racing, the Cup Series, but is actually a sanctioning authority with a whole ladder system of racing series.<\/p>\n

It's expected in any case that van Gisbergen will race in the top-tier Cup Series in a limited capacity that will more than likely limit him to the road course races.<\/p>\n

The Kiwi has said as much and has pointed towards a full-time program in either the second-tier Xfinity Series or the third-tier Truck Series.<\/p>\n

Indeed, van Gisbergen made his Truck Series debut and his first oval appearance at Indianapolis Raceway Park where he finished just off the lead lap in 19th.<\/p>\n

In the Cup Series, van Gisbergen's two starts to date have been with Trackhouse Racing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Despite interest from other teams, owner Justin Marks is planning to have van Gisbergen in his stable come 2024.<\/p>\n

In what capacity remains to be seen.<\/p>\n

Although van Gisbergen has proven his capability in a Cup Series car, there might yet be a hurdle to a full-time Cup Series program, should Trackhouse Racing push for that.<\/p>\n

NASCAR may prefer that van Gisbergen learn superspeedways in the second or third division before having a crack at the Cup Series full-time.<\/p>\n

"We're working hard right now on putting a deal together for him," Marks said on Monday.<\/p>\n

"It's my plan, he'll race for Trackhouse next year alongside some of our partners in the Chevy family.<\/p>\n

"He wants to do this. He's done everything that he wants to do in Australia and he's really excited and really really good.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"He's just really, really good. When he goes through the learning process on an oval I think he'll get really quickly up to speed. We're just really excited about that."<\/p>\n

Before reporters even began asking questions, Marks stated he didn't have a charter to field van Gisbergen in the Cup Series in 2024.<\/p>\n

A charter is a licence that guarantees a team can compete in the Cup Series for regular season points and a shot at the playoffs.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Van Gisbergen's two cameos to date have been as a wildcard.<\/p>\n

"I don't know if it matters," said Marks of the charter system.<\/p>\n

"The charter thing is a funny business right now. Look, I'm running a racing business here. I don't have a billion-dollar company that I can lean on or anything like that. We've got a lot of people that are interested.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"The barrier of entry is high financially right now and I'm not convinced you have to have one to go race. We're going to try and expand and grow as a business, that's not 100 per cent dependent on us and our ability to buy a charter."<\/p>\n

After the Supercars season concludes at the Adelaide 500, Marks said there is a chance van Gisbergen could move to the United States straight away and race late model stock cars.<\/p>\n

It's all pointing towards van Gisbergen going full-time in the Cup Series eventually.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Whether that's in 2024 or 2025 is up in the air. For Marks, there's no doubt van Gisbergen will shine.<\/p>\n

"His rate of adaptation has been such that we really believe this is a guy that can come in and be a star in this sport," he said.<\/p>\n

"We're working on a transition for him next year, get him a lot of experience, a lot of track time in different divisions and really being intelligent and methodical with how we build that program. Then we'll see what the future holds."<\/p>\n
