Retiring Netherlands great Stefanie van der Gragt \ufeffscored a remarkable redemption goal, but it wasn't enough to edge past Spain in a FIFA Women's World Cup<\/a> quarter-final thriller.<\/p>\n

Spain won Friday's game 2-1 thanks to a Salma Paralluelo \ufeffleft-foot strike in extra time, sending the team into a World Cup semi-final for the first time.<\/p>\n

The 19-year-old fired a shot past Netherlands goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar\ufeff in the 111th minute, becoming Spain's youngest World Cup goalscorer and winning the game in the process.<\/p>\n

It was heartache for the Netherlands and particularly the veteran \ufeffvan der Gragt, who had handed Spain the opening goal of the match with an accidental handball in the box in the 81st minute.<\/p>\n

Commentator Chris Wise noted van der Gragt was "devastated" when the VAR showed the ball hit her forearm only an inch or two inside the penalty area, allowing Mariona Caldentey to step up and slot the opener.<\/p>\n

\ufeffFortuitously, though, it was van der Gragt who only 11 minutes later fired a rocket past the Spanish 'keeper to level the scores 1-1 and send the game into extra time.<\/p>\n

The strike sent the Dutch players into raptures, as well as the crowd at Westpac Stadium in Wellington.<\/p>\n

It was a quarter-final of high drama, \ufeffwhich began barely 10 minutes in when Spain was denied a goal by the ball hitting the post twice in as many seconds.<\/p>\n

A header from Spanish striker Alba Redondo was superbly batted away by van Domselaar\ufeff, but the ball hit the goalpost and bounced back to Redondo who struck it with her foot, only to hit the post again.<\/p>\n

It meant the scoreboard remained 0-0 at half-time despite Spain having 23 touches inside the box compared to their opponent's two.<\/p>\n

"Well we've seen some wonderful\ufeff saves at this World Cup, but that one is among the very best," commentator Wise said.<\/p>\n

Former Matildas captain Melissa Barbieri marvelled at the save.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"\ufeffThe ball in is superb, the follow-up post run, the save incredible… also a slight touch of the hand from (Netherlands defender Stefanie) Van der Gragt also had the Spanish players asking a question," Barbieri said.<\/p>\n

There was more drama in the second half when the Netherlands were awarded a penalty only for it to be overturned upon VAR inspection.\ufeff<\/p>\n

In the 64th minute, Lineth Beerenstyen fell in the box after being shouldered off her run by Irene Paredes.<\/p>\n

The referee blew a penalty and handed \ufeffthe Spanish defender a yellow card, only to then check VAR and overturn the decision, judging Paredes to have acted fairly.\ufeff<\/p>\n

While Spain dominated attacking possession for much of the first half, the Netherlands fought back brilliantly and the game could have gone either way when it went to extra time.<\/p>\n

Ultimately it was the Spanish teenager who decided the result, with \ufeffvan der Gragt now retiring and the Dutch left wondering what might have been.<\/p>\n
