Kangaroos<\/a> coach Mal Meninga<\/a> has \ufeffclapped back at Phil Gould<\/a> after the rugby league guru said it was time for Australian captain and fullback James Tedesco to make way for either Dylan Edwards of Reece Walsh<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Gould argued on Wide World of Sports' Six Tackles with Gus<\/em><\/a> podcast this week that Tedesco would not be primed for the end-of-year Tests because the Roosters are unlikely to play finals football, meaning the Tricolours skipper would be pulling on his Kangaroos jersey after a lengthy stint without time on the paddock.<\/p>\n

Gould also noted Tedesco's dip in form and the emergence of "new blood", putting forward Penrith's Edwards and Brisbane's Walsh.<\/p>\n

\ufeffMeninga shot back at Gould when pressed on SEN radio.<\/p>\n

"You look at the James Tedesco situation … I know that Teddy wants to play. He wants to play the international program and I think that's fantastic because, hey, you're only on this earth once upon a time. If you're good enough and you're playing well enough and you're the captain of the Aussie team, you want to keep that going," Meninga said.<\/p>\n

"If the Roosters don't make (the finals), they finish early September, that gives him four weeks of rest. So, I see that as a benefit."<\/p>\n

The Roosters are placed 12th on the ladder\ufeff and will meet the Dolphins, Eels and Wests Tigers in their remaining regular-season games.<\/p>\n

Tricolours coach Trent Robinson gave Tedesco a week off\ufeff after State of Origin III, in which the NSW skipper had a brilliant game in a 24-10 Blues win<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He spent his week off in Byron Bay and has since lined up against the Titans, Broncos and Sea Eagles.<\/p>\n

In addition to Tedesco, Edwards and Walsh, Kalyn Ponga, Tom Trbojevic, Ryan Papenhuyzen and Scot\ufefft Drinkwater have been thrown up as candidates for the Australian No.1 jumper.<\/p>\n

"I know for a fact Teddy will turn up for the international series," Meninga added on SEN radio.<\/p>\n

"We've got a PM's game, so there's a game there that he could play in. That would prepare him for the international series.<\/p>\n

"If players don't make the finals it's just a great opportunity to rest them.<\/p>\n

"It's such a hard and arduous year and off the back of the World Cup, as Gus is alluding to, fatigue does come in.<\/p>\n

"But I think (the break) freshens the players who don't make the eight. I think they're more of an asset than those who have played right through the finals. Obviously they're more battled-hardened, but there's a lot more maintenance to get them through the series than with the fresher guys missing the eight."<\/p>\n

League officials are yet to announce the end-of-year Test schedule, but Australia is expected to be involved in a tri-series with New Zealand and Samoa.\ufeff<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
