Netherlands forward Lineth Beerensteyn is happy to admit her first reaction on learning the United States had been knocked out of the Women\u2019s World Cup<\/a> was \u201cbye!\u201d.<\/p>\n

It was raw and spontaneous relief, coupled with a little schadenfreude. The joy over someone else\u2019s demise was, perhaps, understandable.<\/p>\n

The US and Netherlands played out a tight 1-1 draw during the group stage in Wellington, where the Dutch will meet Spain on Friday in the quarter-finals. The group-stage match was a repeat of the 2019 final, when the United States beat Netherlands 2-0.<\/p>\n

Beerensteyn played in that final, which in part may explain her relief that she won\u2019t have to play the United States again at this tournament. The Americans lost in a penalty shootout to Sweden after their round-of-16 game ended in a draw after extra time.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom the first moment I heard they were out I was just like \u2018Yes! Bye!\u2019\u201d Beerensteyn said Thursday. \u201cFrom the start of the tournament they … were already talking about the final.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was thinking, \u2018You first have to show it on the pitch before you talk.\u2019"<\/p>\n

The Dutch forward said she didn't mean to be rude in her observations.<\/p>\n

\u201cI still have a lot of respect for them but now they\u2019re out of the tournament," she said. \u201cFor me it\u2019s a relief and for them it\u2019s something they will have to take with them in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n

Beerensteyn and her Dutch teammates go into the quarter-final in good form and in good heart.<\/p>\n

Apart from the draw with the United States, Netherlands beat Portugal 1-0 and Vietnam 7-0 in group play and South Africa 2-0 in the round of 16.<\/p>\n

Friday\u2019s match throws up a thrilling head-to-head contest in midfield between Jill Roord for Netherlands and Aitana Bonmati for Spain. Both play in central midfield and are goal creators as well as scorers.<\/p>\n

Bonmati has contributed three goals and two assists for Spain so far. Roord has four goals, one behind tournament-leading Hinata Miyazawa of Japan. Against South Africa, Roord regained possession eight times and won four tackles in the middle of the field.<\/p>\n

Bonmati has stepped up as a leader for Spain as injury continues to curb the influence of Alexia Putellas, the two-time Ballon d\u2019Or winner.<\/p>\n

Putellas started two matches in the group stage, playing around an hour both times, and joined Spain\u2019s 5-1 win over Switzerland in the round of 16 from the bench in the 77th minute.<\/p>\n

Bonmati said this week a leadership role comes naturally.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, it's innate,\u201d she said. \u201cI like to communicate, I like to talk and I like to transmit that character to the whole team. When I have the ball, when I don\u2019t have the ball, when things are going badly, I always try to help my team.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Netherlands, there's been a couple of sour notes.<\/p>\n

Midfielder Danielle van de Donk will miss the quarter-final after picking up a second yellow card against South Africa.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel very stupid,\u201d she told Dutch media. \u201cYou don\u2019t want to be suspended for the next round and I now have to deal with that personally."<\/p>\n

The match also is played at the most inconvenient time for fans in Europe \u2014 the 1 p.m. kick off in New Zealand is 3 a.m. in Netherlands.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a shame the fans of the countries involved have to watch the game in the middle of the night,\u201d Netherlands coach Andries Jonker said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut on the other hand it\u2019s the consequence if you organise a tournament in this part of the world and we should take it as it is.<\/p>\n
