Matthew Johns<\/a> has ruled himself out of coaching the Samoa<\/a> men's team alongside brother Andrew<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\ufeffThe Toa Samoa coaching chair is up for grabs after Matt Parish quit this week, having taken the tier-two team to last year's Rugby League World Cup<\/a> final.<\/p>\n

The Johns brothers – who won the 1997 premiership side by side playing for Newcastle – had previously offered to coach Samoa for free, following reports of friction in camp between Parish and his players.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, younger sibling Andrew told Wide World of Sports he would still consider doing the job<\/a> in light of Parish stepping down.<\/p>\n

But it appears he won't be doing so in tandem with Matthew.<\/p>\n

\"Matthew<\/p>\n

"There was talk before the World Cup that the players had signed a petition so they wouldn't play under Matt (Parish)," Matthew Johns told SEN radio on Friday.<\/p>\n

"Our thing was, if this happens right before the World Cup, then Joey (Andrew) and I would come in and coach the side, and we'll do it for nothing.<\/p>\n

"Our plan was going in there, to coach the World Cup, put a coaching structure in, take some guys in who can then take the baton and the momentum and keep going.<\/p>\n

"The Samoan job, it's for a full-time coach, it's not just about coaching, it's about cultivating Samoan rugby league.<\/p>\n

"The World Cup would've been perfect for me with my work commitments but unfortunately that didn't happen.<\/p>\n

\"Immortal<\/p>\n

"As far as taking over the team, unfortunately that's gone past, the World Cup was the opportunity."<\/p>\n

While Matthew can't commit to being a head coach, he did offer to help Samoa in a part-time capacity if the offer was there.<\/p>\n

Matthew is considered an astute rugby league analyst and has done coaching work with\ufeff top NRL players including Storm premiership stars Cooper Cronk and Cameron Munster.<\/p>\n

Andrew is an in-demand halves consultant who currently works with the Knights and the NSW Blues.<\/p>\n

\ufeffWhile the brothers have worked closely in several roles previously, they had a reported falling out after comments Matthew made on radio during this year's State of Origin series.<\/p>\n

When speaking about the Samoan job to Wide World of Sports on Thursday, Andrew did not speculate about coaching alongside his brother.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
