British boxer<\/a> Anthony Joshua<\/a> believes the sport has a drugs problem amid calls for the global adoption of a set of anti-doping rules.<\/p>\n

Joshua has made the calls after his fight with Dillian Whyte<\/a> was called off after his rival tested positive to a yet-unnamed illegal substance<\/a>. He will now instead fight Finn Robert Helenius in London on Sunday morning (AEST).<\/p>\n

Whyte is the third elite-level boxer since the start of last year to be pulled from a fight for a failed test.<\/p>\n

Last October, Chris Eubank Jr's fight with Conor Benn was called off the week of the fight after it emerged the latter had failed two voluntary tests.<\/p>\n

Then in January, Amir Khan was banned for two years after he failed a test following a fight against Kell Brook in February 2022.<\/p>\n

It's also the second time Joshua has had to pull an opponent over a failed test. In 2019, he fought Andy Ruiz Jr after Jarrell Miller tested positive to several banned substances.<\/p>\n

"I don't know how they're going to sort it out or what their solution is to this problem," Joshua told the BBC.<\/p>\n

"But it clearly has a problem.<\/p>\n

"It's not only the belt you're competing for, it's leaving this game with your faculties. Boxing is a dangerous, dangerous game. Even on the side of it where anti-doping is involved, people do take it for granted."<\/p>\n

In a separate interview, Joshua said he believed expert estimations that up to 70 per cent of fighters were involved in doping in some capacity.<\/p>\n

"I don't understand how 60 to 70 per cent of people can get away with doping if you get random drug tests?" he told The Guardian (UK).<\/p>\n

"I get drug-tested all year round. Every quarter, I have to submit my whereabouts, where I'm going to be every day, at what hour of the day, so [drug-testers] can turn up randomly if they want."<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, Australian Olympic gold medallist Jessica Fox revealed the incredible detail she must provide the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) in order to remain compliant with regulations.<\/p>\n

In a viral TikTok, Fox revealed she had to provide an hour window every day she could guarantee she would be home should drug-testers come knocking. If they come and she's not there, she cops a strike.<\/p>\n

They can still arrive outside that hour, and if she's not there, she said she must report to them within the hour or face a strike.<\/p>\n

Joshua faces similar requirements.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"It's been like that since 2011. I've submitted it every day of my life. So why am I under that pressure but 60 to 70 per cent of other boxers aren't?<\/p>\n

"Once you sign up to a top-tier promoter they should all have that [approach to random testing] as part of the deal."<\/p>\n

Matchroom chief executive Eddie Hearn, who promotes both Whyte and Benn, said regular testing of fighters at both the elite level and below was needed.<\/p>\n

He said an introduction of a global set of rules was also of critical importance.<\/p>\n

"There are governing bodies in each state in America which have their own set of rules," he said.<\/p>\n

"The British board have rules and even that isn't clear. I think we need a clear set of rules for the sport globally – which is easier said than done".<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
