Former NBA<\/a> star Matthew Dellavedova<\/a> has been cut from the Australian team ahead of this month's FIBA World Cup, in what Boomers<\/a> coach Brian Goorjian called the most difficult decision of his coaching career.<\/p>\n

\ufeffThe 2016 NBA champion and three-time Olympian, 32, did not survive the axe when the squad was trimmed to 13 players ahead of their warm-up games next week, with guard Will McDowell-White the other player left of the squad.<\/p>\n

The Boomers will play Venezuela, Brazil and South Sudan in Melbourne on August 14, 16 and 17, before the squad sheds one more player and begins\ufeff its World Cup campaign on August 25 against Finland.<\/p>\n

The Boomers will lean on a younger squad which is viewed as the third favourite to take out the tournament, with the US and Canada topping the list according to the bookies.<\/p>\n

As Australia looks to the future in the backcourt with the likes of Dyson Daniels and Josh Giddey, Goorjian said it stung to leave someone like Dellavedova off the team.<\/p>\n

"On my mind is this selection, which everyone has been talking about, it is going to be probably the most difficult thing I've done in coaching," Goorjian said ahead of the selection on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

"And I've coached for a long time."<\/p>\n

Dellavedova earned a name for himself while playing alongside LeBron James for the Cleveland Cavaliers, with his dogged defence a feature in the 2014-2015 finals series, before \ufeffsnaring a ring a season later.<\/p>\n

He was also a pivotal part of Australia's quest to win a maiden medal at the Olympics – with the Aussies taking bronze at the 2021 Tokyo Games.\ufeff<\/p>\n

His recent recall to the NBA for Sacramento was designed to give him another opportunity to play for the Boomers, but rising Aussie stars in the NBA have improved immeasurably, forcing Goorjian's hand.<\/p>\n

Australia will rely on Giddey a lot more after the 20-year-old built his game up with Oklahoma City after being drafted a couple of years ago.<\/p>\n

Goorjian will also have several other stars at his disposal\ufeff like Josh Green, Joe Ingles, Dante Exum and Matisse Thybulle.<\/p>\n

Jock Landale is currently injured but is expected to be fit for the World Cup while\ufeff forwards Xavier Cooks, Jock Landale, Jack White, Duop Reath and Nick Kay also making the cut.<\/p>\n
