Eddie McGuire<\/a> says AFL<\/a> clubs are "furious" over reports the league has approached Geelong star Patrick Dangerfield<\/a> about joining the AFL Commission while still playing.<\/p>\n

The report by respected footy journalist Caroline Wilson<\/a> came amid an appetite within the board to add more football voices, following the departures of Jason Ball and Kim Williams.<\/p>\n

The move would make Dangerfield the first active player to serve on the commission but McGuire is confident that "it's not going to happen", pushing champion Leigh Matthews as the league's preferred candidate.<\/p>\n

"Football clubs have completely lost their minds about this\ufeff in the last 24 hours," McGuire said on Nine's Footy Classified<\/em> on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n

"The clubs are really furious that this is where things are going, even as a thought bubble they're saying 'what the hell's going on?'<\/p>\n

"It's an independent commission, so you can't have someone who is … a captain\ufeff or even an employee of a football club.<\/p>\n

"Can I just say this, it's not going to happen."<\/p>\n

Dangerfield, who is the AFL Player's Association president and Geelong's current captain is not even considering the role, according to McGuire.<\/p>\n

"There's been dramas everywhere. Even Patrick Dangerfield going 'how the hell did an innocuous conversation\ufeff about something down the track maybe, end up like this?'' McGuire said.<\/p>\n

He confirmed the league was still keen to add a "contemporary" and modern leader to the board, hence the interest in Dangerfield.<\/p>\n

"The big push is for Leigh Matthews. My understanding is the AFL wants someone a bit more contemporary," McGuire said.<\/p>\n

"The contemporary issue is what brought Dangerfield into the picture."<\/p>\n

Leigh Matthews, whose "name has been around for two years" is reportedly hoping he gets the nod.<\/p>\n

"Leigh wants to do it," McGuire said.<\/p>\n

\ufeffEssendon champion Matthew Lloyd also threw his support behind Matthews, lauding his football smarts as perfect for a role on the commission.<\/p>\n

"He would challenge opinions, he's doesn't go along for the ride … I think anyone is the game would want to listen to him," Lloyd said on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n

"Who comes up with Patrick Dangerfield\ufeff? Who's the one who thinks Dangerfield is the right person? He may well be in ten years' time or so."<\/p>\n

Geelong triple premiership player Jimmy Bartel also wants to see Matthews in the role.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I'm with you, Lloydy, Leigh Matthews is one of the most pragmatic people in football," Bartel said on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n

But McGuire remains certain that the "leaked" Dangerfield conversation is not where the commission will land when it votes in "the next month".<\/p>\n

"Gil McLachlan said to me tonight four names will go up to the selection committee, with five presidents on it, that's what's going to happen and it will happen in the next month," McGuire said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
