Eddie McGuire<\/a>\ufeff is confident the Gold Coast Suns<\/a> will sign Damien Hardwick<\/a> as their next coach in a matter of time, despite the AFL reportedly turning down extra cash to get the deal over the line.<\/p>\n

It comes as Suns CEO Mark Evans flew to meet Hardwick in Europe<\/a> to table a monster five-year deal at the start of August.<\/p>\n

"Lock it in that Damien Hardwick will be the coach of the Gold Coast Suns," McGuire told 9News Melbourne on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n

The Suns have called on the AFL for some extra money in order to afford the hefty salary the three-time premiership-winning coach is likely to command, a request which has been rejected to date.<\/p>\n

"I understand that the Gold Coast have made entreaties to the AFL to receive some marketing money for Damien Hardwick to be the new coach of the Gold Coast Suns," McGuire said.<\/p>\n

"It has been met with a resounding 'no' from headquarters and that he'll have to get his contract inside the soft cap.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

However, McGuire said Hardwick has been gracious in his dealings.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"He's not being greedy in his negotiations, in fact, being very fair," he said.<\/p>\n

"The bottom line is, the deal is just about done.<\/p>\n

"It's only a matter of actually dotting the i's and crossing the t's for Damien Hardwick to be announced \ufeffas the new Gold Coast Suns coach."<\/p>\n

Leading AFL journalist Damien Barrett also delved into who Hardwick has reportedly requested to be in the coaching box alongside him should he get the job.<\/p>\n

Danny Daly, the current \ufefffootball boss at the Brisbane Lions and who Hardwick "spent a lot of time with", is at the top of the list.<\/p>\n

"That is a person in Damien Hardwick's thoughts strongly," Barrett said on Nine's Footy Classified<\/em> on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n

"He's got a track record that people trust him, he worked with Dani Laidley prior to going to Brisbane."<\/p>\n

McGuire also believes Daly's history makes him the right man to support Hardwick\ufeff.<\/p>\n

"He's had a long pedigree, and well regarded within the football industry," McGuire said.<\/p>\n

Hardwick stepped down as Richmond coach in mid-May, citing a burnout as his reasons for his resignation.<\/p>\n

He has been linked to the Gold Coast Suns since they axed embattled coach Stuart Dew, just a month after Hardwick's departure from Richmond.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
