Marnus Labuschagne<\/a> entered this year's Ashes series as the No.1 Test batter in the world, but the Queenslander has since tumbled to fifth in the rankings and been\ufeff snubbed from Australia's 50-over World Cup plans<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He's now dealing with another blow, having been demoted to a one-day Australia A squad that's set to face New Zealand A in three matches in Brisbane across August and September.<\/p>\n

Australia A squads have traditionally been used to give potential stars of the future opportunities against better opposition, so it's unusual Labuschagne has been selected.\ufeff Perhaps even insulting, given his superb career record.<\/p>\n

Labuschagne's insatiable appetite for the game may not be matched by anyone in Australian cricket \u2014 Michael Hussey, the man known as Mr Cricket, could be an exception \u2014 so he's likely to lap up the Australia A one-dayers with the zealousness he's renowned for.<\/p>\n

But he would of course be gutted to have been overlooked for Australia's World Cup squad, which will play five one-dayers in South Africa and three in India in the lead-up to the tournament, to be held in India across October and November.<\/p>\n

Labuschagne also missed out on selection for the T20 squad that's set to tour South Africa for \ufeffthree games.<\/p>\n

The right-hander has only averaged 24.93 from the 17 one-day internationals he's played since the start of 2022.\ufeff<\/p>\n

He only managed scores of 15 and 28 in Australia's most recent ODI series, against India in March.<\/p>\n

Among those joining Labuschagne in the Australi\ufeffa A squad are youngsters Ollie Davies, Liam Hatcher and Will Sutherland.<\/p>\n

He's joined in the squad by players with limited Test or ODI experience in Matthew Renshaw\ufeff, Todd Murphy, Matthew Kuhnemann, Ben McDermott, Gurinder Sandhu, Ashton Turner and Josh Philippe.<\/p>\n

Labuschagne has played 43 Tests, 30 ODIs and one T20 international.\ufeff<\/p>\n

He's developed into a prolific Test first drop since getting another chance in the second match of the 2019 Ashes series, when he became the first concussion substitute used in a Test after Jofra Archer rocked Steve Smith with a brutal bouncer.<\/p>\n
