The dispute between the NRL<\/a> and the Rugby League Players Association<\/a> is such a mess that it's rumbled for 21 months\ufeff, led to a media blackout and threatened to result in players refusing to play games.<\/p>\n

But ARL Commission chairman Peter V'landys<\/a>\ufeff has described the matters the two parties are divided on as "trivial", and claimed they could meet in a room and reach a solution in "a couple of hours".<\/p>\n

"If we couldn't do it in a day I'd give it away because they're not big issues," V'landys told Nine reporter Danny Weidler in an interview that aired on 100% Footy<\/em><\/a> on Monday night.<\/p>\n

"If both parties came here in good faith you could settle those issues pretty quickly \u2014 probably a couple of hours, to be quite frank with you. They're not massive. The big issues have been settled: the funds, the management of the funds, the total money to the players, the salary cap, the minimum payment, the holidays. All settled. These are minor issues."\ufeff<\/p>\n

On January 13, the chief executives of the NRL and the RLPA \u2014 Andrew Abdo and Clint Newton \u2014 had lunch at a hotel in the eastern suburbs of Sydney.<\/p>\n

A man called Brett Clegg\ufeff joined the two big heavy-hitters as the third-party mediator for the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) talks, but the meeting was a fizzer.<\/p>\n

Despite the fact the last CBA agreement\ufeff expired on October 31, 2022, Phil Gould agrees with V'landys' call that the stoush could be settled in a couple of hours.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffYeah, two hours max. That's with the meal included," Gould joked on 100% Footy<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"I've said all along, I've been in this game 48 years, 48 years I've been in professional football, I've seen a lot of people come and go, I have been a supporter of the players all the way along, I survived as a coach because I supported the players, I survive as an administrator because I support the players, I survive in the media because I support the players and I really believe in them.<\/p>\n

"I do not support the RLPA, I do not support these actions in any way, shape or form.<\/p>\n

"The matters are too trivial for the actions and the unrest that we're seeing here at the moment, and they need to get this sorted out as quickly as possible.<\/p>\n

"Players have never been better paid, better looked after, better cared for in any part of their career, and the other stuff is just trivial posturing.<\/p>\n

"I am not a supporter of the RLPA."<\/p>\n

In Weidler's interview with V'landys, the reporter put it to him that "the players clearly don't trust the NRL".<\/p>\n

V'landys hit back.\ufeff<\/p>\n

\ufeff"\ufeffNo, I disagree with you. I think the players, a lot of them don't actually know the issues," said the ARLC boss.<\/p>\n

"If the players knew that they've got the best conditions and moneys in the history of the game, if they knew they're getting a 37.4 per cent increase, if they knew they've gone from six weeks to nine weeks (of) annual leave, if they know that we've got no intention whatsoever of increasing the number of games, I don't think they'd be in the position where they're in now."<\/p>\n
