Payne Haas<\/a>' contract saga looks likely to drag on past November 1 \ufeffafter reports he's set to reject the Broncos<\/a> latest offer.<\/p>\n

The news comes after Broncos coach Kevin Walters<\/a> recently declared how confident he was of Haas accepting the club's three-year offer, said to be worth as much as $3.5 million.<\/p>\n

"We expect to re-sign Payne within the next couple of weeks," Walters told Triple M radio.<\/p>\n

"That's not something I'm managing, it's others in the club looking after that.<\/p>\n

"We're very confident we can maintain and keep Payne long-term at the club.<\/p>\n

"He is playing some of the best football of his career and is still only 23.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

9\ufeffnews reporter Danny Weidler revealed on Nine's 100% Footy<\/em> on Monday that Walters' comments took a number of parties by surprise, before reading out a statement from Haas' manager Ahmad Merhi.<\/p>\n

"I have a wonderful relationship with Kevvie. We have always been hopeful of a good outcome with the Broncos and we are still in dialogue," Weidler read.<\/p>\n

"Talk of other issues only distract from this milestone achievement (Haas' 100th game) and Brisbane's run to the finals."<\/p>\n

Weidler went on to explain one of the major sticking points behind Haas' next contract is a post-career plan. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"The issue for Payne, and what's going to be very important for Payne Haas, is what's going to happen post-football," he said.<\/p>\n

NRL legend Paul Gallen was taken aback by the demand but credited the star's forward thinking.<\/p>\n

"He's 22 years old\ufeff … for a young bloke that's not a bad thing, but that's a long, long time away," he said.<\/p>\n

"What's he expect,\ufeff a 10-year deal at the Broncos until he's 32 years of age and then a guaranteed job?<\/p>\n

"I've got no issue \ufeffwith him thinking about his future, I take my hat off to a young bloke thinking about that but it's such a long time away for a bloke in rugby league. A week in rugby league's a long time let alone (10 years)."<\/p>\n

Canterbury Bulldogs general manager Phil Gould said that type of demand isn't normal within rugby league. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"Not for one so young, but it's a long-term view of course," he said.<\/p>\n
