Tour<\/a> veteran Milos Raonic<\/a> rallied to win a thriller against Frances Tiafoe<\/a> despite almost being derailed by a bizarre set point.<\/p>\n

The 32-year-old, who has barely played during the last two years and is considering retirement due to ongoing injury concerns, beat his American opponent 6-7(12), 7-6(4), 6-3 in the first round of the Toronto Masters.<\/p>\n

\ufeffThe wildcard entry stunned his ninth-seeded opponent, and the win was made all the more impressive given he had to compose himself after a meltdown at the end of the first set.<\/p>\n

The pair were locked at 12-13 in a tiebreak when a Raonic forehand clipped the net tape and landed in, only for Tiafoe to sprint to the ball and execute a deft return cross-court to win the point, and the set.<\/p>\n

The issue was Tiafoe ran into the net after hitting the ball, and before it had bounced twice on Raonic's side of the court, which would generally result in a rule infraction and the Canadian winning the point.<\/p>\n

Chair umpire Fergus Murphy initially called\ufeff the net touch, but quickly corrected himself and awarded the point – and set – to Tiafoe.<\/p>\n

Raonic and Tiafoe both approached Murphy for clarity, and the chair umpire had to ask for calm before explaining his reasoning.<\/p>\n

"He hit this section of the net, \ufeffthis section of the net doesn't count as a touch…"<\/p>\n

Murphy gestured \ufeffto the part of the net that extended outside the doubles lines on the court.<\/p>\n

In most professional singles tournaments\ufeff the net stops just outside the singles lines, and inside the doubles lines, but in Toronto the net remained extended as if for a doubles match.<\/p>\n

"What the f—? A net is a net," Raonic replied.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"Let's ask the supervisor if this counts as the net. I want to ask."<\/p>\n

Murph\ufeffy asked the match supervisor to enter the court and then continued to explain the rule.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffFrances hit a winner, it bounced, and then he ran into the net so I called foul shot," Murphy said.<\/p>\n

"Then I realised he ran into the net section\ufeff this side of the singles stick, so I changed my mind… that's not a judgement Milos, that's a rules question."<\/p>\n

Raonic continued to argue the point but the point and set stood for Tiafoe.<\/p>\n

A loud bang was then heard around the arena when Raonic slammed his racquet\ufeff in frustration.<\/p>\n

The hometown player ended up winning the match in two hours and 44 minutes.\ufeff<\/p>\n
